Review of the Flashpoint NANO Pro remote for Canon Let me first state why I ordered my Nano Pro remote. I have owned and used the Nano for a year after not actually wanting to pick one up because I was not a fan of the touch screen due to its size, however after experiencing misfires with the other remotes I own R2 Pro and R2 Pro 2C devices, I felt like this may be the cure. The Nano was not disappointed. I learned to appreciate the features and the sleek fit on all of my Canon bodies. I ordered a second Nano just a few weeks before the notification of the Nano Pro pre-order appeared and decided to pull the trigger solely based on the larger size and the AF assist being reintroduced on this device. Unboxing The first thing I noticed was the sheer size of the device, small in appearance but next to the Nano? its MASSIVE! The fit and finish of the device is sleek and has a bit more refined feel than the Nano but in some part, it may lessons learned from the introduction of the Nano and the brushed metal banding is a very elegant touch to the overall appearance of the device itself. I will not lie; I was excited to see the reappearance of the AF assist beam and could not wait to see how it sized up against its older siblings and that was not too long to see once we got it in the studio. However, a quick in house test with my 1DX and 300mm lens the beam did not have too much success when focusing on my dog at 17feet laying on a white tiled floor. The one thing is that there is a bit of a letdown-there is no protective carrying case like the Nano. I am literally disappointed. The little jewel bag does not cut it for a device like this one, in my opinion. It needs to be protected, and I will be finding a case that will hold it properly as well as fit in my camera bag. In action The obvious to me is how the remote just looks like it belongs on the camera. I cannot overstate the fit and finish on the device on the camera just flat out works more so than the little Nano. For my uses both in and out of studio, I set my operating distances to 0-30m on the remotes and typically my key light is closest to my shooting position which can induce misfires due to interference largely, I can say so far that misfires have dropped in occurrences noticeably. With my mobile assistant, the proximity is a bit greater and the rate of (as well as opportunity for ) misfires drops even further. Outside, I shoot up to 3 lights in different groups, again, it's a bit easier to maneuver on the larger touch screen and it's a great feel on the top of the camera. What I have not done yet is work with the Nano Pro on the primary camera with a Nano on the secondary camera on my dual camera strap harness system bouncing between different settings on each body for any type of interference issues. That is on the testing next side of things. Conclusion I find this device to be VERY good for the Flashpoint system, and its ease of operation just seems flawless in the studio and location areas of operation that I have deployed the device. I will seriously consider having a back up Nano Pro remote over the coming months. I am as I said early on, disappointed that there is no protective carrying case as with the Nano device, it is not a deal breaker but a little bit of a shortfall if anything. I highly recommend this device.
