After having so many portable drives that I constantly worried about breaking-- finding a drive that COMES with its own protection has been game-changing. The rubber jacket gives me the confidence to use and travel with this drive more frequently which means more content is being made! Always a plus. The orange color is actually very nice since most of my gear is black, having this drive be so brightly colored-- I always know where it is.

IT arrived quickly after I ordered it. I use this to keep my final edits to my photos for my creative instagram. Helps that I have a macbook pro that is usb-c only.

Very fast, portable, convenient. It mounts fast and from my experience works perfectly. I cannot comment on "rugged", as I don't think any drive should be mishandled and I'm certainly not going to do a life test. Do note that this is a platter drive, so no matter what "rugged" might indicate to you, if this is dropped when spooled, your data is gone forever as the platter or heads or both will be damaged. if you need truly rugged, you need a true SSD, not this. For me, I need to transfer loads of video from Video, Drone, and Camera when traveling and this thing is blazing fast with a small footprint.

I use mine for Time Machine backups of my computer. In the past I used the embedded hard drive in my Time Capsule. But with the current released Mac Software, I often get a message that for reliability reasons Time Machine must do a new complete backup. I worked this issue with Apple Care techs and engineers for many months and it occasionally stops only to come back again. I have multiple direct connect LaCie external drives that always work. But the older ones used the older thunderbolt interface and this new drive doesn't require the converter cable. One snipe, the supplied cable is very short and doesn't self store like their 4TB Thunderbolt 1 drive did.

To be clear, this is not a bad product. If you only have USB C ports on your computer (ahem, Apple), this could certainly make sense. It's rugged, well-built, and performs as advertised. The problem, though, is that you're paying for speed that you're not actually getting. Because the hard drive is a traditional disc drive instead of an SSD, it can't output data at more than 150Mb/s. So even though USB C/3.1 can theoretically transfer at 5 Gbps, you'll never see those speeds from this drive. The bottleneck is the hard drive itself, so you can't really help that. So if you just need a rugged, quality drive with a USB C output, go for it. But if you don't NEED the USB C connector, there are much cheaper options that will get you just as good speeds. You don't need anything more than FireWire 800, Thunderbolt (even generation 1), or USB 3 to max out the potential of the hard drive in it, and models with those features are considered "outdated" and thus cost a lot less.

The hard drive works great with the new MacBook Pro lineup. Bought it because of the USB-C. Its fast and reliable and the price is reasonable. I recommend this product for people look for an external hard to pair with the new MacBook Pros.
