I purchased this lens mainly for indoor sports, but I used it to take some Senior photos of my nephew. Wow! It was great! Great condition for being a used item.

I bought this to be an unobtrusive lens when travelling. So far, I've used it at hockey games from the third level with excellent results as well as out doors. The images are crisp and clear.

ended up returning this lens as 85mm on a D7000 was too close for indoor photography and found the 50mm was a better length for me. but get it if you take photos where you have enough room to move back.. its a winner!!

I am very pleased with this lens. I shot a few random shots around the house and was very pleased. I then did a photo-shoot with a model and was extremely pleased with the outcome. Very sharp, great quick focus and love the bokeh.

Great portrait lens. The lens hood screws on like a filter, the lens cap does fasten inside the hood.

Great lens for portraits! Awesome bokeh effect and look. I don't know why you would spend $1200.00 - $1700.00 on the 1.4 when this lens is [$] and great for much less at doing the same thing.

I needed another lens for my boudoir business...but it was totally my fault as to why I had to return it...I didn't have enough room in my studio to effectively use it. Going to get the 50mm instead.

This Nikon lens exhibits excellent sharpness and contrast at all apertures, even wide open. The virtually perfect focus may be in part due to the f1.8 maximum aperture. The lens is also short and lightweight and seems to have no weaknesses. As long as the subject matter is within the range of an 85mm telephoto, this lens is a super choice for either full format, 35mm, or DX cameras.

Solid lens, great for portraits on a full frame. The hood mount is a screw on, like a filter, but the lens cap mounts to the inside of the lens hood. This tripped me up a bit at first when it felt like a one or the other config.

I use this lens for portraits, most often improptu, in existing light. This lens is sharp, the bokeh is good and it can produce professional results. Great price for the results.

I wanted a fast, sharp, "affordable" lens with nice creamy bokeh. This lens exceeds my expectations. It is accepatably sharp wide open and fully sharp at f2.0. Bokeh is better than I expected, which was very important to me. Unlike some people I don't mind a bit of noise from AF, I have other screw drive lenses, though the AF is not one of the fastest. A great performer, well worth the money and so lightweight.

Excellent lens for low light, portraits, and good light weight walk around short telephoto lens. Good solid construction and fast autofocus. Lens is very sharp at f4 and beyond. A bit soft at f1.8

Fast autofocus, excellent lens for low light. Use it mainly for portraits. Nice Bokeh. Feels heavy for a lens this size, nice construction, build is solid. Would buy this lens again.

This is a portrait lens for those of us who cannot justify the cost of the Nikon 85mm f1.4. Light, sharp and capable of professional results. Highly recommended. Belongs in everyone's bag.

I searched the internet on various sites for months for a lens I could use for my Nikon D70s and within my price range (~$500 US). I selected the Nikon 85mm f/1.8D AF Telephoto Nikkor Lens and it has been great decision. With this lens, the detail is excellent and I have been able to capture great action shots. Now you will need to be close to the ice to capture great pixs as it is not a long telephoto lens. I am thrilled with this lens and have no regrets with buying it. I bought from Adorama and their pricing [...] was great.

Definitely a portrait lens, but great for low light with a variety of subjects. Great compliment to the 50mm f/1.4.

It is amazing how sharp this lens is wide open. This allows for low light photos at f1.8 without a loss of sharpness. On my D90, this lens provides the same magnification as a 127.5mm on a 35mm camera. The combination of high speed, sharpness at all f-stops, and significant "reach" makes this one of my favorite Nikkors.

Bought this lens specifically for high school indoor sports photography, namely Wrestling and Basketball. The lens is fast enough to shoot at high shutter speed at medium ISO.

Love this lens. I like it better than my 50mm for portraits and low light.

We asked our Facebook and Twitter friends which lenses were their favorites for portrait photography. Here's what we learned.

Just is there’s no best camera for photojournalists, there is also no best lens. But there is a range of lens types that will give you a better chance at getting the shot.
