Better than a kit lens, maybe

I purchased this lens as my first post kit lens and for the price its been okay. It does a fair job with close up work but falls flat with any kind of back lighting. Its chromatic aberration is horrible. I've since replaced it with a much more advanced lens at a much higher price. I seldom use this lens now. I can only recommend this lens as a stepping stone to get your feet wet with a telephoto. If you do any serious photography you'll soon be wanting to upgrade to the G-series lenses. If you have the resources start there.

I would recommend any alpha users to buy this lens from Adorama

This is the initial review since I have only placed it on my A65 one time. I did however notice the focus seems to search for focus in Auto, ok in Manual. Will be able to provide a more accurate review after I use the lens some more. The price was good, the shipping was fast and I would recommend any alpha users to buy this lens from Adorama that I have found to have an excellent customer service.

Average lens

I shoot outdoors 99% of the time for landscapes. This lens performs average in all aspects, but has a definite sharpness loss beyond 250mm and you get more CA on high contrast items. I guess this is normal for a cheap lens. I will likely upgrade to a faster lens as this does not perform very good in anything darker than mostly sunny conditions. Bokeh on close subjects is fair as well. Overall just too soft and too much grain for me even at 100 ISO. For videos in low light or indoors this is very poor and requires ISOs of 3200 minimum unless you have good light sources inside. I shoot with an A57 crop sensor if that helps anyone's decision making.

Spectacular!

This lens is really worth investing in if you're looking for a quality telephoto zoom, but don't have the cash to drop on a high-end lens.

Amazing Camera

Me & my wife got blown away with the crisp & life like photos from our A57 with the use of this lense. I got my SAL 75300 at a Sony Store for a knock out price that can't be beaten. I should have bought this long time ago to capture the places & imagery from our outdoors escapades. Anyways it's not to late because I have my new toy with me this coming summer...

Value zoom lens

Over all this lens is a good value zoom lens. I'm very happy I have it, and I would recommend it to anyone who just needed a zoom lens for a few shots here and there, but not as their main lens. One thing that you should keep in mind if you are looking to buy this lens is how much will you use this lens at its maximum and minimum focal lengths, and what you will use it for. Also you're going to want a bit of light with this lens if you want to stop your subjects without blur.

Great Lens for the Price!

This was the first lens I went and bought for my a330 (other than having the kit lens) and I am very pleased with it! It is quick and quite accurate when it's in auto. The only thing that really annoys me about this lens is that it slides, I really wish Sony put a lock on it. I take a lot of equine/canine images and I am always moving and having to walk a lot, so it gets really annoying having to recheck and make sure the lens isn't fully extended. Overall great lens for the price. I have since upgraded my camera body to a a65 and it works even better!

Above average kit lens

I did a side by side comparison with several other lenses. All performed similarly on a shot of the top of a mountain eight miles away. Lenses were attached to a Sony A65. At full size the chromatic aberration was significant and the objects were less sharp than with an L lens (as expected). For wildlife the images were sharp and fast. For a kit lens I think it is well above average and well worth the money. Buyers must note that the lens does not have image stabilization which id does not need with a Sony camera making it a nice match for Sony.

The long zoom to buy for most Alpha owners

I got this in a bundle with my a65 body. Even at full retail the lens is a reasonable value. The build is very solid but not too heavy. I've read reviews where color fringing is a problem but with firmware corrections turned on I haven't noticed this. I didn't expect to use this lens as much as the kit lens but find it's better built and funner to play with depth of field with. It's also surprisingly a much better 'macro' lens than the 18-55mm for taking pictures of flowers and such.

Good but not great

I had until recently a Nikon system with a similar lens. The Nikon is sharper, easier to focus, feels more durable.

It is OK for what it is

I tried the lens without a tripod and it is sharp above f 8. As long as there is lots of light, the lens performs well

Good zoom lens

I baught this lens just before I went to africa, it really helped me get the photos i needed of the aimals wich were sometimes far away and I caught great photos in the end. But I always had to use manual focus because I found the autofocus was noisy and very slow. Which if an animal was running I would find it easier to use manual focus rather then have to wait for the autofocus. But still a great lens in overall just remember that if you are going to buy it it has a slow autofocus.

Not for low light shooting...!!!

I purchased this lens to be able to shoot really close portraits of people on my A200, the lens is perfect when the subject is not moving fast as the auto focus is really slow, this lens should have had a SAM or something, also what i liked about it is the distortion control on this lens, you almost won't feel it while shooting, colors are really rich comparing to the 18-70 kit lens came with my camera and sharpness as well and bokeh is really nice... Shooting in low light could be a real problem if you tried leaving the lens to do the auto focus job as it hunts like forever (use manual focus to avoid this)... and of course due to the long zoom range handheld photos with longer exposure time that is less than 1/100 sec. are not sharp... Overall, it's a great value for money, as you get a really well built lens, with a construction similar to lenses double the price of this one.. Colors, sharpness, bokeh and build quality are really great... Its perfect for Macro, close-up, portrait photography as long as light conditions are good... Recommended for amateurs, and photographers in a short of budget..

It's a great lens

Yesterday I used the lens to take pictures to Moon and the Sun (with solar filter). Details in Moon are fantastics. In Sun, sunspots are easily visibles.

Wonderful Purchase!

I love this lens as it gives me a great chance to get a good photo of planes landing/taking off, Or at the race track when your stuck at a distance. I would recommend a lens between 200mm and 700mm over this 75-300mm though.

Nice lens but...too long

I knew this lens was not a real short lens but, the length coupled with the weight on the lightweight A55 Sony makes it really nose heavy and not a comfortable to use lens. I will be ordering a compact telephoto and hopefully this will make for a better feel. The lens does focus fairly fast and seems to do a good job of staying in focus even when shooting video. Mostly my mistake in ordering a lens that wasn't what I really wanted.

I have used this lens with a390 SLR, it works good and suitable for beginners, easy to use and it delivers encouraging, satisfactory, and acceptable pictures. I can recommend this lens because it gives great value at an affordable price.

Pictures Suffer Above 200mm

I've been using this lens for about 6 weeks now. I have found that it takes good pictures at focal lengths shorter than 200mm as long as there are not any sharp lines with high contrast (i.e. black to white). If there are any areas with sharp black to white contrast, there is severe chromatic aberation. Also, above 200 mm the pictures aren't quite as sharp - you can definitely tell that they were taken with a telephoto lens. Given the price of this lens, these defects in the picutre may be expected. They are not very noticeable in 4x6 prints, but if you blow-up a picture or print larger than 4x6, they become very noticeable.

Good economic lens

This lens I've had for a year or so now and adding the replacement 70-300 Sony G lens this year. For those on a budget or wanting good quality glass for a good price then this is a good investment. You can't beat the range of this lens either. I've used it for many events and portraiture sessions and it provides great detail and sharpness when you're at about f7.1 to f.13. If I wasn't working with more high end clients, I wouldn't mind keeping this lens longer, but if you're really serious and doing major projects, I would recommend the 70-300 Sony G lens. The quality is very great from that lens. Once again Sony, nice optic here that won't break your pockets. The focus of this lens is rather poor and then it's quite irritating when using a CP filter because the front of the lens rotates as well so this can bring some challenges when you're taking a photo. Applying the lens hood to this lens and also taking it off is quite difficult, and puts a lot of tension on the focus ring. I've not had any issues with that in the year that I've had it so no worries about damaging your lens.

Great detail for the price.

Having just received the Sony A500 camera and 18-55 mm & 75-300 mm Sony lens, I have not been able to take many photos yet. However; I am pleased with photos so far. Attaching photo of Red Tailed Hawk in the woods and crop of small part of the original photo. I think details held up pretty well for this much of a corp. Taken with Sony 75-300 mm kit lens at 250 mm, 1/500, f6.3

Great Bargain

By Muzics

The 75-300MM lens is a great value lens and it will easily satisfy the budget minded hobbyist or professional as well. This lens takes great photographs and it's zoom capabilities makes it one of my favorites. The only issue is the dust that easily collects on its rubber surfaces otherwise you cant beat this entry level piece of glass.
