I had a very important interview & when I plugged in my microphone. It didnt work at first, Then I realized the wire was a bit loose. But had it been worse I wouldnt be able to do my job. I dont like not having a back-up, so I bought this as my back up.. Scout's Motto: BE PREPARED

obviously you can find cheaper mini/xlr cables. i selected a sony product because i am hooking my sony m10 recorder to my ex1 or other (mostly sony) products. knowing the quality and consistency of such products keeps me focused on my shooting and not my gear. that's important.
