Very Happy

So I've been in the market for a simple "point and shoot" video camera of 1080 quality to improve my youtube videos. I really wanted a Canon, but because my local stores are still waiting for inventory because of the tsunami in Japan, the sales guy said that I should take a good look at the Sony. I very rarely listen, but I've owned Sony in the past and have always been happy with the quality. The reason I was drawn to the Canon was I wanted seamless transition to my Mac and iMovie. I wanted it to be idiot proof as I'm new to Mac and iMovie. I had read other reviews which indicated that this camera was compatible including Apple's own site. But initially I could not get the two to talk at all. When I connected the video cam to the computer it would not recognize in iMovie. After a lot of trial and error and looking at sony's support page I realized that the order of connection was key to successful video transfer with iMovie. Once I realized this and followed the suggested procedure all was well. The key for all you iMovie folks is you must connect the video cam before opening iMovie, otherwise it just won't work, at least I could not get iMovie to recognize my videos if iMovie was open prior to connecting the camera to my computer. The same holds true if you take the sd card and insert it directly into the computer. It must be installed prior to opening iMovie. Now that I know this I'm extremely happy with the video quality and the ability of the cam to focus up close which is extremely important for my you tube videos. My only knock against the camera is that I use it on a tripod and then to get the sd card out I have to remove the camera from the tripod to open the sd card slot, which is a minor pain!

Just one thing

I love this camera. But when push comes to shove, the thing I want to talk about most is not what I love, but what I don't. Because right now the thing I don't love about it, is causing me a major problem. I am getting ready to use this camera to shoot a short film, but it doesn't have an external microphone jack. So now I am left with not only figuring out a way to record the sound (better than the built in microphone - which is not bad, but certainly not good enough to use for mass video distribution) but also how I am going to synch the externally recorded sound with the picture. Everything else about the camera is amazing - but this problem is throwing me for a loop.

Great camera, for price and size.

Purchased this little camera 3 days ago. Filmed a couple of things and played it back on an 32" Full HD tv. Really impressed with the result. Was even better than our local HD tv channel. So far I'm extremely happy with the camera. Also the website and Box states that 64bit computers are not supported. This is not true. Works perfectly on my Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit, with PMB installed.

Awesome Camcorder!

All in all, it's a great camcorder; no doubt! I love it and all. I highly recommend this Handycam to anyone who's looking for an affordable camcorder cause this one is not big or too small; just perfect. Does very well at night as well. The HD quality vids are amazing as well compared to the standard definition Sony Handycam. Get it!!!

A Good Starter for HD Cams and works with iMac

I have the CX100 model which is comparable to the CX110 where the former takes 4.0 Mega Pixels and 8GB of internal memory. I've had this for more than a year taking HD videos/photos and downloading them to my iMac 09' using iMovie 09'. Videos burned from the iMac using iDVD is crisp in Std Def and the still captures also comes out excellent and better than the photos from my other still (Nikon, Sony) cameras viewed in my Sony 720p TV. The videos burned in Std Def DVD is as clear as watching the video recorded in HD with camera directly connected to the TV via component cable. And YES, I am able to transfer to an iMac (SL OSX 10.6.4) with NO problems. Before buying I had concerns and did some research on how it can be done. Long story short, plug the CX100/CX110 via USB and choose Connect USB form the video cams menu and choose Connect. To remove the camera, choose End from the camera screen and follow the directions in the screen. Make a wrong move and you might erase the contents. So, play around with test videos before the real thing. Some cons: takes long to focus during night scenes, 8GB is too small for HD recording, menus are difficult to navigate (although CX110 may have changed), hard to use zoom controls with long fingers, issues using ext. SD card for videos (not for photos.) Overall: Good for the price.

mac users be wear

sony time to get your head out of your ... and come into the new world. if your going to make something that does not work with mac that should be in bold caps on your package, WE ARE IN THE DARK AGES AND DO NOT WORK WITH MAC USERS. i just spent the last 3 hours on sonys website trying to find software. I don't think they even know that mac users are out there. SONY :(

Good Camcorder

This camcorder works perfectly well on my MacBook Pro, the HD 1920x1080 is very good but not designed for fast action recording, just lower the setting to HQ if you use it for action and you will get a good result. I did nice videos of my vacation in full HD, everything was crystal clear. Forget about the pictures, they are not really good, but who cares, we are talking about a camcorder not a SLR. You can buy it, nothing will give you higher quality on the market for that price.

Does not stand up to expectations

The camcorder produces great video, but still shot images are just a joke! Spec claims 4.2M gross pixels, Effective Picture Resolution : 1.57M Pixels (4:3) and Still Image Max Effective Resolution : 3M. Who can decipher that!? I think it is deceiving to place 3M ad on the camera, if it is actually only 1.5M! I have 7M still camera from Sony and even if I reduce size twice to 7/2/2 = 1.75M, the image from the camera is 2 times sharper and bigger in size – so this is nothing close to 3.1M. I bought this camcorder so that I don’t have to carry to camera bags to my trips and now I am screwed up. May be Sony uses wrong JPG compression settings? Is it possible to upgrade software somehow? Even stop-action image from a video looks better than still image. What a frustration!

Amazing camera

Honestly if you do you're research and you know what sort of compatibility this camera has you should know whether you will have problems or not. The CAMERA is amazing. The fact that you supposedly can't use it with a mac should have nothing to do with the camera rating. It's a good thing for people to know but it doesn't change the performance, design, or reliability of the product. If you don't have compatability issues, this camera is fantastic. I use it for freelance level video editing and it gets the job done. Smile shutter is a great feature, especially for things like weddings or family vacation. I was originally shopping for a canon but Sony got me with this one. Totally worth it.

extremely mad.

I bought this camera and it doesn't even work on my Mac. Sure, to use it you need iMovie 9. That costs about 80 more dollars. It should really work on a Mac. Now i have to go back to the store and return it. Great.. Thanks a lot.

A true disappointment

I'm using Leopard (10.5.8) but I can't download the movies! Now I have to bring a card reader with me everywhere I go? or buy the latest OSX?? This is just ridiculous. How could the software developers have missed this? ALL of my cams and video cams (old and new ones) are all compatible with Mac EXCEPT this LATEST purchase (CX-110).

Works on Mac Snow Leopard (10.6) / iMovie 9.0

I followed the directions for Mac to the letter, following the sequence exactly: turn on camera, then plug in USB, and imported into iMovie (9.0) without a problem using Snow Leopard (10.6) I could not import to my husband's iMovie (6.0.3) using Mac OS 10.5.8; it would only recognize the pictures taken, not the video. I tried dragging it to iMovie, but it is not compatible with the older version of iMovie. It is an awesome camera, so easy to use. iMovie is more burdensome to use now, so I plan to transfer the video to a hard drive from the camera to save it anyway. Making DVDs is going to be a thing of the past, so this camera will make saving movies very easy!

Good camera-Needs more features.

All in all its a good camera. Could use more features like nightshot, timelapse, or highspeed. Can't believe it doesn't work with mac. iMovie works with it if you plug the card into a card reader but not from the camera. Other than that not bad.
