Great Purchase

I purchased the VRD-MC5 friday and was recording friday night. It is a great one touch system. I recorded from my dvd player and it was really simple. The quality was great. No problems. I must tell everyone to purchase a VRD-MC5 if they want to record there movies, pics etc. The menu is easy to choose from.

Somethings it cannot do....

I purchased in order to convert VCR tapes to CD. Unfortunately most (all?) are protected against copying. I called Sony tech support and they said there is nothing you can do. Beware if this is what you wanted to use if for. I did not try any other feature.

EXCELLENT LITTLE MACHINE BUT...

I got it 2 years ago and have 2 sets of cables plugged from my vcr and my cable box going to the machine and just switch whenever I want to use it to record from cable box or vcr.It has a DVD Preview that allows you to see what's on the DVD that you are recording. Cons:Needs a speaker or a way to ck that there is AUDIO going into the machine and a REMOTE CONTROL WILL COME IN HANDY just in case you do not want to set the timer. Also you have to finalize all dvd's before being able to watch in the dvd player. It can be frustrating at first, but once you get it going... is a beautiful litle machine. Very Happy!!!!!!

Good machine, but..

I purchased this to get DVD copies of my old videotapes. It works fine, with one or two "maybe".. First, the recorded video level seems to be a bit hot, colors come out very very vivid, one wonders if the chroma compensation could be improved. Second, trying it with various SVHS VCR machines, the sync sometimes has problems from a VCR, which I solved by feeding my VCR video into a time base corrector, and then the output video into the Sony. With this combination, the DVDs are coming out quite acceptable. Sony might want to work on the sync regenration

Works great for me!

Got tired of glichy PC DVD transfers. Bought my MC5, took it home, plugged it in, hooked up Sony HHD camcorder and went to work. Menu is easy to use and in less than 15 minutes you have a DVD of your video.

Sony Forever

I needed something for photo storage since I maxed out my memory on my laptop. I had done my research and this was exactly what I needed. I just purchased this on Friday and over the long weekend I have been able to make 8 DVD's with the slideshow feature of my pictures from 2007 to current which covers at least 7,500 photos/videos. I am so pleased with this purchase and found it for a great price.

Bad Screen

I purchased this to be able to copy my Mini DV's to DVD. I tried to connect through USB, but you can't do this with the Mini DV camcorder. Surprise! You have to purchase a $45 i-link cable to connect the camcorder to the DVD recorder. When I finally purchased the cable, I tried to connect and the screen failed to turn on on the recorder. So, I returned the DVD recorder back to Costco, but of course they are now sold out. Be sure to do your homework before you buy this product.

Simple Device, Well Executed

I bought one of these to get old video tapes onto DVD before something happens to them and we loose the family memories. It works like a champ. There's nothing fancy about it but it does what it's supposed to do and even my wife can operate it. If you want to edit your movies you'll need a computer. If you simply want to store them securely and watch them with the family this is a great option.

EASY! EASY! EASY!!

OMG! This is the BEST way to save your home movies. So easy! I tried to do the very time consuming computer way and all kinds of other DVD recorders with no luck. I have home movies on Sony Beta from 25 years ago and on VHS tapes that turned out beautifully! Two things I wish this had is audio as you are recording onto DVD (small digital cameras even have audio in playback, don't know why this doesn't) also I wish the viewing screen was larger. I hope Sony will come out with one with these upgrades, if they do I gotta get it!
