The Video Devices PIX 240i Video Recorder with Timecode is an outboard video recording device that records QuickTime files in up to 12-bit 4:4:4 1080p over 3G-SDI by means of Apple's ProRes 4444 codec. You can also record in ProRes 4:2:2 and Avid's DNxHD. For ProRes 4444 the transfer rate is 330Mbps and for the other codecs 220Mbps. The PIX 240i features 3G-SDI and HDMI connectivity and a 5" IPS monitor with 800 x 480 resolution. In addition, balanced XLR audio inputs with premium microphone preamps reflect Video Devices' expertise in production audio. The 240i up until the end of 2012 supported only up to 10-bit 4:2:2 recording. At the end of 2012 ProRes 4444 was added. If the recorder you receive doesn't natively support 12-bit 4:4:4, you would simply need to download a free firmware upgrade from the Video Devices website.
With regard to data storage, the PIX 240i recorder uses either CompactFlash memory cards or removable 2.5" solid-state drives. Both types of media are formatted by the PIX recorder as UDF volumes, which makes for seamless compatibility with both Mac OS and Windows systems. The optional PIX-CADDY 2 allows the recorder to hot-swap media and provides FireWire 800, eSATAp and USB 3.0 connectivity.
The recorder also features some advanced video processing capabilities, including aspect ratio conversions, video scaling, frame rate conversions and 3:2 pulldown removal. Timecode can be derived from an HD-SDI stream, an external jammed source, or from the built-in timecode generator. As a confidence monitor, the PIX 240i offers false color, zebra, peaking and 1:1 pixel mapping.
