I played with this lens for a few hours after receiving it. It is mounted on my D80. I will be comparing it to the 18-135 G kit lens my camera came with.I was looking for a smaller and lighter snapshot lens, and this lens fits the bill. Significantly easier to carry around than the kit lens. Image quality appears comparable to the Nikon kit lens for this purpose.Focus is much slower and noisier than the Nikon's USM motor. I was able to send the lens into perpetual focus hunt by trying to focus on a horizontal line. I would think that's a body problem, except the kit lens had no problem. One other function I needed from the lens was an actual aperture ring. The G lenses don't include that. I wanted a lens to mount on non-coupled things like extension tubes. This lens worked very well on the tubes. Even at its minimum aperture of f22 images were sharp and clear. The lens mount is kind of a [*] when you first get it. The alignment mark isn't clear, so it takes a few tries to get the plastic mount lined up properly. Of course once you get the hang of it, there's no problem.Star effect in highlights is good. A nice 6-point star showed up in one macro shot. (Photo attached.) Bokeh is decent too. The bang for the buck on this lens is very good. It fits my needs. I may end up selling the kit lens because this one is more flexible. We'll have to see after I've used it for a while.

I bought this as a backup lens to a nikkor of comparable zoom range. It takes a 58mm filter instead of my nikkors 52mm so it has a little more light gathering ability than the nikkor. I must say that for such a cheap lens this sucker performs with the best of them. It focuses kind of slow in live view on my d90 and is manual focus only on my d60 but that's nikons fault not tamrons. It focuses super fast through the view finder on the d90 though. crystal clear photos, bokeh is mediocre but livable.

A standard zoom lens from a wide 28mm to a medium telephoto range of 80mm. The use of aspherical elements in the front group reduces the number of elements required, and the use of strong engineering plastic in the barrel makes the body a light 237g. Consequently, it is easy to carry.
