I have used vivitar flash heads for 20years the 285 is not as sofisticated, but is dependable. The 385 has built in slave function and that makes it handy for portable use as a kicker light. I would recommend to anybody.

This on and off camera flash gives you the ultimate control of light on the subject. I use it as a studio flash with soft boxes and bare or with snoot for hard light. Lots of power, wide angle or telephoto. I have owned a Vivitar 283 flash for 35 years, and this a great companion; power, manual control, in studio and out.

The Vivitar 385HV is a versatile and durable high output flash. It provides powerful, consistent light and can be utilized with any digital camera with a flash shoe. The auto thyristor circuitry allows for faster recycle times, and a greater number of flashes. It features a guide number of 138 feet at 85mm. The flash has 5 auto f/stop settings for controlling depth-of-field and maximum auto flash range. Built-in variable power allows you to achieve accurate exposures and convenient fill-flash. The auto aperture gives the photographer easy control over depth of field, a higher degree of exposure accuracy, and less battery usage.
The 385HV features a four position zoom head, covering 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm camera lenses. It can be set to bounce at 0 Degree, 45 Degree, 60 Degree, 75 Degree and 90 Degree to allow for softer lighting. Built in red focus beam helps you achieve focus in low light conditions. The unit has an easy-to-read lighted LCD panel, allowing you to work under most lighting conditions.
The built in optical slave function lets you control your subject lighting, whether it's used on-camera or off. The flash reflecting plate creates beautiful lighting which greatly enhances your photographs. The wide angle diffuser can be clipped onto the flash head to soften and increase the coverage of light from the flash. The red-eye reduction feature will prevent your flash from reflecting off your subject's eyes. It operates on 4x AA batteries, and also accepts any 6v-3a external power pack for faster recycle times and more flashes.
