The computer worked great out of the box, the keyboard felt a little bit flimsy and the mouse does not work great, but overall very fast sleep design, very lightweight and 2TB hard drive which is what I was looking for. But the sound stopped working about 3 months in. Fortunately I caught it just in time to return it to Costco.

In the manner of Proust's writings, which chronicle the turn of the 20th century with a tender and tumultuous nostalgia, full of memories both bitter and sweet, so too is my experience with this VAIO SX14 KachiIro. I bought my first one in August of 2024, and subsequently acquired three or four more; this one is for my own use. After nearly seven months of daily driving, I've returned to evaluate this product once more. I must say, I remain thoroughly satisfied. This machine represents my younger days-a vessel for my nostalgia and affection. In my middle school years, this very product line cost an astonishing 29,999 RMB, or about 4,200 USD. Adjusted for today's inflation, that would be at least 6,000 USD, if not more. You can imagine the profound impression it left. It was, quite obviously, a machine I could never possess, only admire from a distance. Times have changed. As a moderately successful operator of an import-export business and a dental practice, buying a VAIO, even the premium KachiIro edition, is now merely a matter of choice. As I shared in an earlier post, the initial thrill of finally acquiring this dream machine was immense. Now, that excitement has matured into a long-term appreciation. ### **The Virtues:** 1. **Exceptional Performance for its Generation:** With a 13th-gen Intel Core processor, it achieves a remarkable initial Cinebench R23 score of over 11,000cb, holding its own against the latest Ultra 9 processors. While its power efficiency is of course not comparable, its raw performance has not fallen behind, even after two years. 2. **An Object of Praise and Nostalgia:** When I take my HP ZBook to a café, people assume I'm just another hardworking professional in medicine or consulting. HP, much like ThinkPad, is perceived as a corporate tool, even if it's your personal purchase. But the VAIO is different. People can't help but ask, "Is that a VAIO? How many years have you had it?" When I tell them it's from last year, they exclaim, "Wow, they're back in the US?" Yes, they are, now sold through VAIO USA. This news brings a wave of excitement, though I must admit that to the Gen Z eye, the "VAIO" logo is easily confused with the Chinese phone brand VIVO-a mistake even AI databases seem to make. "I used to love my VAIO," one person told me, "you know, the one with the 'switch'?" Yes, I know the one. The legendary VAIO Z from 2010, a supercomputer of its time, its four SSDs in a RAID 0 configuration blazing past 1,000MB/s. That was the old dream I could never afford. 3. **Elegant Design:** An older gentleman who struck up a conversation with me in a café, a man who sounded well-versed in cigars and design, drew a fascinating parallel. In his words, the VAIO's design evokes the same spirit as Jimmy Choo's Romy 85 pumps, Stuart Weitzman's Nudistcurve sandals, or Christian Louboutin's So Kate heels-even the iconic skull motif of Alexander McQueen. He found it interesting, even sexy. In a synesthetic sense, this VAIO laptop embodies the same elemental qualities and textures as these designer brands, transcending the simple realm of specs like CPU, RAM, or SSD. It goes beyond mere information and communication technology. 4. **A Superior Interactive Experience:** The keyboard is a joy to type on. It takes some getting used to, and while it may lack the bold, clear font of my HP (a concession to my aging eyes), the wider key spacing, once adapted to, yields a surprisingly higher accuracy than a standard keyboard. The touchpad, with its discrete left and right buttons, is a retro touch and perhaps a bit small. The newer SX14R model has rectified this, making the touchpad perfectly sized. If you are a fan of glossy screens, I implore you to buy the SX14R. 5. **Rock-Solid Stability:** Whether running on Windows 10 or Windows 11, I have not encountered a single significant crash. Especially after using Group Policy to disable Windows Updates, the machine can run for over 100 days with 80% memory usage without a hint of lag. ### **The Flaws:** 1. **Excessive Noise Under Load:** Under heavy workloads, the fan noise can reach 55-57 decibels at the vent. For a business laptop, I find this unacceptable. You will need to consider using noise-canceling headphones. Even at the user's position, the noise level is around 45 decibels, which is audibly distracting. 2. **Short Battery Life:** Although I never expected great battery life from a 4K model, the machine is so pleasant to use that I've made it my primary portable device, replacing my HP. The logic is simple: my HP ZBook weighs 1.8kg, while the VAIO is a mere 1.077kg. You can't be expected to carry a mobile studio around with you, only to leave the sleek VAIO plugged in at home. 3. **An Outdated Aspect Ratio:** Even in 2023, a 16:9 screen feels a bit too dated. The newest models have thankfully corrected this. It remains a great disappointment to me that VAIO did not release an anti-glare version of the flagship model in North America. 4. High Cost of Ownership: It can be very hard to repair, I buy it as a consumption, for my personal emotional enjoyment, I do not care about if it will break, if it does, I would replace it without repair. Despite they promised you 1yr warranty, I do not think that would make any difference as most parts they used no matter which country actually make them, they were exported from Japan and it can be slow to repair. ### **Purchasing Advice:** We have recently been in contact with VAIO Asia and may be reviewing their upcoming F142 and F162 models. These are VAIO's own designs (distinct from the FS series), featuring Intel Core 5-120U or Core 7-150U processors, LPDDR5 memory, PCIe 4.0 SSDs, and the cascading of other new high-end features. For prospective buyers in North America, here is my advice: 1. **For those on a modest budget (e.g., under $1,500) who love VAIO's design:** I would recommend waiting for the F142/F162 models to be released. While their CPU performance will be largely on par with the previous generation, the GPU will feel noticeably snappier thanks to the inclusion of LPDDR5 memory. The F142 is also 10% lighter and more robust than the old F14. Pricing is expected to be similar to the current FS series, with the F142 weighing 1.23kg and the F162 at 1.59kg. 2. **For those on a modest budget who love the VAIO brand:** The Costco versions of the FS14 and FS16 are worthy purchases. Their design is well-suited to the demands of the North American market. 3. **For those on a modest budget who place a high value on "Made in Japan":** The clearance models of the 13th-gen VAIO SX14 are an excellent buy. They essentially belong to the same generation as the new F142/F162, and while they may be slightly less responsive with shorter battery life, their raw performance is actually superior. 4. **For those with an ample budget who don't mind a glossy screen:** The SX14R earns my highest praise. It is a truly fantastic machine.

I may add my case to BBB for a case against the seller if they do not want to give me a right answer about this review. Cuz one of my clients(I am a forwarder) told me they get something unlikely Brand New.(I doubt such thing ever since the 1st machine I ordered) as it was near the upper limit of Hard drive poweron hours and written on data. DON'T get me wrong, as such things can be easily to tell. However, as this machine itself is still good, especially in the USA. We can continue buy it. What we have to do include: 1. Never ship it in Brand New condition but Open-Box to your clients if you do forwarding service like we do. Then, you can get rid of the obligation cuz international returning is like pain in the back. 2. Check it with oobe\bypassnro to skip the activation phase to ensure it is really Brand New. 3. Check AIDA64 to see its battery condition and hard-drive data. If you find something is wrong, you should file for return or exchange. It is not legal to sell even Open-box as brand new for an official website.

Bought three VAIO laptops within a year of each other and one by one broke beyond repair within a few months after the warranties expired!!! Never ever seen these such a low qualities/durability from even a home-made computer. Save your money and buy something else, anything but VAIOs

A Disappointed, Yet Hopeful, Letter from a Long-Time VAIO User This is my 11th VAIO purchase from VAIO USA, bought for a client replacing her aging Fujitsu U94A. For clients who cherish the "Made in Japan" standard, our options in the US are limited, especially with Panasonic's Let's Note models being generations behind here. VAIO has always been the clear choice. My own positive history with the brand, and this model specifically, made me choose it again without hesitation. This time, however, that confidence has been shaken. I feel a sense of helplessness in writing this, as I truly don't know what has happened to VAIO's quality control. I hope this review remains visible, as it seems very few actual buyers of this specific model post their experiences. Here are three points of deep disappointment: ******Pre-existing Battery Wear. Out of the box, the battery consistently shows between 5-10% wear. This isn't a one-time issue; it has happened on every unit I've purchased since the SX14-Kachiiro model last autumn. While I know this wear level might recover or be considered "within industry standards," it is not what "superior quality" implies. The battery is from CATL (Dongguan ATL), a giant in the industry. It's baffling, as other brands like Huawei use the same supplier's batteries with rarely any sign of initial wear. You must notify your supplier. This issue forces me into the awkward position of repeatedly explaining to my clients why their brand-new, premium laptop already has a worn battery.(even though these wear usually disappered in the end) *****Unusually High Power-On Hours. The SSD on this latest unit reported 50-60 hours of power-on time. This is deeply concerning. While the laptop itself feels new, and I have no evidence to suggest it is a refurbished or open-box item, these numbers are impossible to defend. A factory-sealed product should not have more than 10 hours of use, at most. In my 13 years of professional experience, this is far outside the norm and frankly, it demands an explanation. ****** Persistently Incorrect Product Description. The product page for this SX14-R still contains errors. This model uses a 2560x1600 Touch Glossy Panel, not the panel you have listed. I notified your team about this last December, yet the error remains uncorrected. If you want to attract more than just a handful of die-hard fans, attending to such basic details is essential. To be clear, the machine itself has its merits. It is fast, noticeably smoother than the previous SX14, and is built to be a long-lasting product. This is where my helplessness truly comes in. I find myself still recommending this laptop, but only because I take it upon myself to fix its shortcomings. I will provide my returning client with a brand-new extra battery, just in case, and I will personally upgrade the SSD to a Samsung 990 Pro or SK Hynix P41. We end up replacing the questionable parts ourselves. If you truly want to thrive again in North America, you must approach your business with more sincerity. Once Panasonic releases its latest Let's Note lineup here, your loyal customers may not wait for you. "Made in Japan" is more than just words on a chassis; it is a spirit, a soul, and a promise of consistency and honor to your customers. It's a promise that, I must sadly say, you are not keeping well.

I bought it on December 3rd and received it on December 11th, 2024. I was disappointed to find that the display is glossy, not anti-glare as I was told by customer service. Anyone who prefers a non-glossy display should be aware of this. I spent a considerable amount of money to confirm this for you. They should added this GLARE in their description now. Aside from this issue, the laptop is excellent. It has been my dream machine for many years. Even now, as a dental office owner and tech column writer, this machine holds a special place in my heart. Turning 30 this winter, I felt it was time to reconnect with my fondness for VAIO. I hoped this machine would add another beautiful chapter to my life. Its stylish design and craftsmanship truly resonate with me; it's more than just a machine. It evokes memories of cherished moments - the good old days, fading sunsets, holding someone's hand for the first time. Being able to afford a VAIO feels like a significant milestone. It's certainly not cheap; it was a luxury item in my youth. But now, at 29, I can easily afford even the top-of-the-line specifications: U7 processor, 64GB RAM, 2TB storage, in Kachi-iro color. I'd love a 4TB option, and since there are compatible drives available (I've installed them in similar devices since October 2023), I might upgrade it myself. It's unnecessary, but why not? Although I was misled about the anti-glare feature, I'll keep the laptop. It feels like a once-in-a-lifetime encounter (????). If the glossy display becomes too bothersome, I'll simply buy a different machine for work. Here's a summary of the pros and cons: **Pros 1. **Exceptional Performance:** The Intel Ultra 100 series processor is incredibly powerful. I achieved impressive benchmark scores, It scores 1766/15600cb in Cine R23, 12900cb in 30min stress test which is awesome. Surpass all japanese competitors about 30%, even on par with next generation's ArrowLake U9-285H(We can see the leaking information now). Its 128EU Arc card is as fast as GTX1650Ti, yes, you may play games. 2. **Superb Craftsmanship: The build quality is top-notch, with meticulous attention to detail. Far better than the older SX14(We bought two in Sept, so I can say it surely) 3. **High-Quality Materials:Unlike most competitors do, VAIO has used premium components, including a Tenax CFRTP carbon fiber chassis(The latest tech just released in July), Sharp IGZO display, UCAJ metal casing, ATL battery, Delta charger, NMB keyboard, and a Sony 9.2MP camera. The thermal system made by Toyorikaga is also excellent. Basically all best parts you can find in the world, and they prioritized nippon companies. Even as a professional, I do not have much to chanllenge their choice. (When I buy other brand, I always buy barebone as I want the best and they offer me cheap part) **Cons: 1. **Glossy Display:** The US model only offers a glossy touchscreen, which is frustrating since VAIO no longer sells a stylus. An anti-glare option would be much more practical. I urge VAIO to consider releasing an anti-glare version. 2. **Battery Life: Could be better. In my tests, it lasted around 8 hours. 3. **Fan Noise:** Can be a bit noisy under heavy load. A dual-fan system might help reduce noise. It is audible if you stay in a reading room or library. Finally, the new Kachi-iro color isn't as vibrant as the previous version, which is a slight disappointment. Overall, I love this laptop, despite the glossy screen. If VAIO offered an anti-glare option, I would give it a perfect score. For now, I'll likely purchase another machine for work and keep this one for personal use. I hope you find this review helpful. Cheers

Bought two laptops 4 months apart. They both lasted about 2 years!!! VAIO should not be in business selling unreliable products under good old name of SONY.

Has all the bells and whistles, and is as light as a feather. Great workmanship evident throughout -- I have always been impressed by Japanese manufacturing standards, and this is no exception. Touchscreen clarity (and definition) is the best I ever seen. Customer service can be a bit on the slower side, sometimes, but they address your concerns. I could not be happier with my purchase. If you are on the fence, well just get it!

This is NOT Sony nor is the customer service like Sony! I had high hopes for this company, but they have no wishes of honoring my order! Do not trouble yourself with ordering from this company! My order was canceled because they sold all available units. I was assured they would find me a comparable product with same specs at the same price. After several conversations and 2 weeks of waiting and frustration, I am informed in an email that I can repurchase at a higher price than I initially paid. Terrible Customer service!

It's worth more than the price. In addition to the pride of ownership that comes from its coolness, I started to like it even more after trying out such as noise cancellation feature during video conferencing. It is recommended!

I bought this laptop a few years back and it's still as fast as ever, these are built to last. It's always been a reputable luxury/business brand so I knew they'd never disappoint in design nor performance. I'm excited to get my wife something similar or to nab a limited edition version for her, this laptop is a huge attention grabber over a lot of other bigger brands because of its unique design.

This is my 3rd Vaio laptop and I still love the product. Fantastic form factor and performance is on par with similar priced product. What gives VAIO the edge are the tons of ports and peripherals that allow me to connect and make presentations just about anywhere in the word.

Buying my VAIO straight from them was simple and the delivery package was top notch shipping wise and my original box was like brand new from a store purchase which meant the laptop had more than adequate shipping protection. The laptop exceeded my expectations in every areas of user experience. It's sturdy and well built. Then when you use the laptop it runs so stand very quiet. You really have a hard time hearing the fans although it doesn't need fans as my laptop never feels hot let alone warm. By far this laptop is the best of the best. It puts my MacBook and windows on the bottom of the list. I will be a loyal vaio user and I have also been using Sony smartphones and it's a winning combination for sure. Thank you vaio for a superior product.

I had the pleasure of demoing this laptop through a friend. I am still in awe of the speed and precision with which it functioned. The graphics were spectacular. The design was sleek, slim, and sexy. So easy to use and navigate. I have been a Vaio fan for over 20 years. I can't wait to make it 21 with an SX14!

Have been a loyal VAIO consumer since the Picturebook over the UX, VPC-X505 and many wonderful designed business notebooks. Sad about the split between Sony and VAIO, but glad the VAIO brand still being alive. What makes it different to the other laptop producers is the upper quality design and the extreme light weight with powerful specs, which makes it for me a great companion for my many business trips abroad. Thanks!

Hear that? Thanks to A.I. Noise Cancelling, They Won't.
The new VAIO SX offers one of the most advanced noise cancelling features ever included in an ultra-portable laptop. Based off AI technologies developed using vast amounts of voice data, the SX offers superior capabilities in distinguishing between your voice and environmental noise.
