A hotshoe flash is just a hair shy of being too large itself.AARON C : These are designed to work with speedlites only.ANDREW F : Hi, I have been using my Apollo 16 as a hair light on a boom with the Novatron D1000 with 3 or 4 (as needed) flash laps (lamps with no fan) system very sucessfully. The flash lamp is put inside through the zipped side of Appolo box and supported on a boom arm which goes through the zipped side as well. Hope this helps.ERIC P : I am not sure if it will fit your flash head. I use it with a Speedotron 102 head which is front to back (flash tube to fan) 10" and 5" in diameter. I use it on a Bogen Super boom as a hair light. It is snug but works well.
Shopper : How to use it with canon580exii?RAYMOND N : This soft box is intended for use with studio flash and not speedlites. With a studio light, the support rod would insert into the reflector dish and be centered. Due to the size of the box, when the softbox is placed on my umbrella tilt bracket, my SB-600 speedlite touches the top panel and does not aim at the center of the box as it should. In a studio setting on the stand below the tilt bracket that is holding the soft box shaft, you could use a clamp and fasten the foot bracket or a hot/cold shoe to the clamp with rubber bands. It seems odd but a strong enough clamp will hold it. You could also attempt something like the Manafrotto 175F Justin clamp or the Morris MTH-202 Umbrella Tilt head which might have a smaller profile than my tilt head (Adorama Universal Tilt Mfr# 781404). If your intent is to use it with a speedlite for outdoor sessions, this is not the setup for you. For on the move photography, you should buy a softbox that was designed for a speedlite.ANDREW F : I am using my Mini 16" soft box with Novatron flash head on a boom to light up persons hair, when shooting portraits. I think that 16" mini soft box is a bit big for the Speed light flash. If I need to use my Speed light (Nikon system) I go with 23cm Speed light soft box made by Making Studio - Chinise company (you will find it on Ebay, very inexpensive, about $15) or 8.6" Lastolite 2420 soft box (about $70). Hope this is helpful.

Easy setting up

Easy setting it up but can't tilt up and down too much due to the limited opening space for the light stand. Wish it comes with the storage pouch. Has nothing to tie and store. They can just make the velcro like the umbrella so that it won't open it in the lightstand bag. One big disappointment.

Nice compact softbox

Like the first reviewer, I thought the box was too small for the Nikon SB800 flash. Actually it is the perfect size if you mount the flash on a stand and stick it through the back zipper UNDER the softbox umbrella shaft.Trying to mount it on the umbrella shaft like the instructions say does not work.

quality product

It is a quality product but I purchased it to use with my off camera Nikon SB-800 mounted on an adjustable mount. Unfortunately the size of the flash and the length of the mount make it too long for this umbrella style mount. I plan to keep it because it will fit on a standard flash head for hair light or a very specific lighting application.

About Westcott 2218 Apollo Mini 16" Flat Faced Soft Box - Fiberglass Frame

Westcott has enhanced the already popular Apollo product line by building the frame with fiberglass ribs. The fiberglass ribs provides added durability for those on-location situations and windy days!

Apollo are constructed using an umbrella frame. No speed rings are needed, just use the umbrella receptacle on your light. Easy opening and closing means easy set-up and takedown. The square or rectangular shape allows you to scrim or control the light more readily. For direct diffusion, position the light facing the white diffuser panel. The light will have a bright center with a soft edge. The distance of the light to the diffuser panel will govern the brightness of the center of the light. For indirect diffusion, mount the Apollo with the light facing towards the back of the light modifier. With the light in this position, light will bounce off the silver metalized back of the unit and produce a more uniform, softer light.
