Having preconceived ideas about the photographs you want to create is an important part of the creative process. However, it can also be a dangerous one. In this episode Getting the Shot, photographer and director Corey Rich talks about one of his most favorite pictures, a climber ascending a rope in silhouette, which he captured years ago on a climbing expedition to a remote desert mountain in Mexico. A late start and slow progress up the wall had thwarted Rich’s preconceived idea to shoot someone climbing at first light. However, by being open to changing circumstances and, most important, turning around to see a new perspective, Rich came away with a signature image. The lesson is simple. Begin with preconceived ideas about your photos, but don’t be afraid throw them out when you look around and see something even better.
