The highly anticipated Atomos AtomX CAST is set to begin shipping. Atomos announced the product back in June, which expands the Ninja V monitor-recorder into a flexible switcher and dock. With four HDMI inputs supporting a variety of video sources, AtomX CAST connects to an expansion port on the Ninja V to become Ninja CAST: an all-in-one switcher, monitor, recorder, and broadcast device.

Ninja CAST may just become the ultimate solution for live switching and streaming applications.

Key Features of the AtomX CAST

  • Transform Ninja V/V+ into a 4 x HDMI input switcher
  • Overlay custom graphics, logos, and lower thirds, for content branding
  • Picture-in-picture effect with any combination of inputs
  • WebCAST: plug and play UVC connection to your favorite software, such as Zoom, MS Teams, Skype, OBS, and more
  • BroadCAST: quality switching and recording in Apple ProRes and Avid DNx
  • MultiCAST: simultaneously record, stream, and output to local displays
  • Touch screen and physical buttons with LED status indicators
  • Separate HDMI outputs; dedicated program out and multifunction on Ninja V/V+ for multiview, preview, or program
  • Audio input and switching options with support for embedded, analogue inputs, and audio-follow-video
  • Easy, quick deployment and reliability: simply connect, switch, and stream

Professional features and intuitive control

Atomos’s objective with the AtomX CAST was to provide an easy way to stream multi-camera, multi-device setups in broadcast quality up to 1080p60. Each of the four HDMI inputs allows users to connect cameras, computers, gaming consoles, or any other video source. Also, you can switch between them using either the Ninja’s touchscreen monitor or the large, LED-lit buttons on the AtomX CAST.

Ninja CAST can switch between single image, picture-in-picture, and four-up modes for monitoring and broadcasting. Even further, operators can add logos, graphics overlays, and other professional touches to their broadcast using intuitive controls. Finally, program and preview material is clearly indicated by the switcher’s illuminated LED buttons, as well as by readings on the touchscreen monitor.

One of the best things about the Ninja CAST is that it’s fully functional as a standalone switcher. By taking the HDMI program out from the CAST to an HDMI input on a local display — such as a projector or TV screen — it’s the perfect companion for in-person events like weddings, conferences, worship services, and more.

Seamless integration for live streaming

As a standalone switcher, Atomos made an impressive and powerful tool. But where the Ninja CAST really shines is in its live streaming ability while connected to a computer via USB-C. The switcher is able to take a significant CPU load off of the computer by performing all of the video processing externally. Dividing the workload is invaluable for smoother, more reliable streams with fewer crashes.

Additionally, the device appears as a media source in software like OBS, X-Split, and VMix for seamless integration into elaborate streaming setups. This means no drivers or further installations required. The average streamer can quickly expand, but also streamline, their arrangement by using the Ninja CAST as the hub for their content.

Suitable for any production, large or small

The AtomX CAST and Ninja V are a formidable pair, versatile enough to complement larger productions or solo streams. Support for up to four cameras is plenty of coverage for most events — from concerts and sports games, to worship services and corporate conferences. Small and light enough to carry in a backpack, it’s a freelance A/V tech’s dream.

In static setups like those streamers use, four inputs provides plenty of flexibility for a face cam, gaming console, content computer, or anything else they want their viewers to see. Undoubtedly, Ninja CAST gives streamers a competitive edge by adding that extra touch of professionalism. Plus, you can use the Ninja V’s recording capabilities to capture gameplay for video uploads.

Please note: the AtomX CAST is designed to work in conjunction with the Atomos Ninja V monitor-recorder. Support for the Ninja V+ is set to debut at a later date.

The Atomos AtomX CAST will begin shipping soon for $399.
