If you’re headed to, or based in, New York City, prepare yourself for a massive photographic event as this week’s sunset will bring out the crowds and iconic images. Sunset photographers, this will be the moment of a lifetime.

Dubbed “Manhattanhenge,” it marks the moment when the sunset perfectly lines up with the street grid system in Manhattan, and provides beautiful western views of the setting sun among the skyscrapers and notable structures throughout the city.

Here’s what you need to know to capture the twice-a-year event:

1. Where you need to go:

The main west-to-east streets will give you the best views, and are the locations you can expect the most viewers. The top ones: 14th Street, 34th Street, 42nd Street, 57th Street, and 79th Street will be the major hubs for photographers.

The High Line (which runs along the west end of Manhattan), Bryant Park, and the Pershing Square overpass above Grand Central are expected to be popular viewing locations, so make sure to get there early if you want a good spot.

2. When you should go:

The event will happen a total of four times in 2018.

On Tuesday, May 29, at 8:13PM, you will catch a half sun.

On Wednesday, May 30, at 8:12PM, you will see a full sun.

On Thursday, July 12, at 8:20PM, you will see a full sun,

On Friday, July 13th, at 8:21PM, you will see a half sun.

3. Share your images:

Use these sunset tips from award-winning photographer Rick Sammon to capture your unforgettable shots, and don’t forget to #Manhattanhenge when you post your images online later and prepare for the influx of sunset images on your feed. It’s an event to celebrate.
