A 19.9MP sensor with global shutter

The RED KOMODO 6K cinema camera has a new 19.9MP S35 global shutter sensor that captures video in incredible detail and clarity. In line with other RED cameras, the dynamic range (16+ stops) in the KOMODO 6K is impeccable and preserves details in the darkest areas and brightest areas — users are free to shoot in varying light settings at different ISOs.

The camera’s global shutter is able to capture quick movement without skewing the pixels and creating blurred and bent lines. The global shutter also tolerates flashes and strobes without sacrificing detail or becoming blown out. Lastly, the global shutter is a huge time and money saver when dealing with visual effects by eliminating rolling shutter artifacts so camera tracking in post-production is a breeze.

6K shooting and REDCODE formats

The KOMODO 6K is capable of recording 6K at 40fps, 5K at 50fps, 4K at 60fps, and 2K at 120fps. Not only does 6K look pristine, but 6K footage opens up many creative possibilities in post-production. Users are able to punch-in on footage to reframe shots or crop shots to their liking without losing much quality. Image stabilization in post-production also becomes much easier when capturing so many pixels.

To further creative possibilities, RED included its updated REDCODE feature for the KOMODO 6K. REDCODE allows creators to capture 6K footage in three different settings: high quality, medium quality, and low quality. High quality is designed for visual effects and motion stills, medium quality is tailored to cinema shooting and high-end TV, while low quality is suitable for online content, documentaries, and anything that requires longer shots. Naturally, the three different settings have different data outputs that shooters can use to their advantage: high quality can record for 30 minutes on a 512GB card, medium quality can record for 48 minutes on a 512GB card, and low quality can record for 77 minutes on a 512GB card.

Lightweight, compact, compatible

One of the more impressive feats of the RED KOMODO 6K is its compact design. The camera weighs just over two pounds (2.1, to be exact) and measures just four inches by four inches. With a body that agile, creators can carry their 6K camera to the most difficult locations. It is also fixed with an RF-style mount making it compatible with a plethora of lenses.

While on set, users can output a live 4K feed to monitors, or playback on the KOMODO 6K’s high-resolution touch screen. RED also sells a wide array of accessories for the Komodo including handles, an expander module, and more.
