April 15, 2015
Independent on-camera monitor maker SmallHD has created the world’s sharpest camera-top monitor. The SmallHD 502is a 5-inch monitor that boasts a 441 pixel-per-inch display for a total of 1920×1080. It is said to display a bright image (400 nits) that is visible in full sunlight, with a 1500:1 contrast ratio and 8-bit display.
Key features:
- 1080p Full HD Resolution
- SDI/HDMI Cross Conversion
- 85% NTSC Color Gamut
- 3-second boot time
- 9 ounces
- 3/4 inch thick
According to SmallHD, the 502’s 85% NTSC Color Gamut is greater than the REC.709 color standard and rivals OLED monitor color display abilities. The 502 features a custom-built processing engine and will accept nearly any resolution and framerate from almost any camera.
The unit features a new 5-inch monitoring standard, which includes a joystick and back button, SD card slot, side capture button, and can accommodate two Canon LP-E6 batteries. It has SDI In and Out ports, HDMI In and Out ports, best-in-class 34D LUTs, and cross conversion. The 502 lets videographers apply higher-resolution, more accurate 3D LUT in real time, which SmallHD claims is best in class.
The 502 is designed for use with both larger video cameras and with DSLRs. It includes standard 3 1/4-20 thread points in the bottom, back and right sides, and is rated to operate at temperatures from 30-90 degrees F.
Users have the ability to zoom the image in and out via a joystick interface in order to fine-tune focus in real-time, in one smooth action. You can also smoothly pan the enlarged image using the joystick. False color, zebra and focus assist and peaking are all available now or via software updates in the near future.
The SmallHD 502 Monitoris available now from Adorama for $1,199.
