The Leica CL—a compact film-era camera adored by many—has returned, this time as a digital camera. Almost the same size as its film predecessor, the Leica CL digital features a simple design, the highly-rated Sony 24MP sensor, an eye-level EVF, and interchangeable lens system. Two lenses—an 18-56mm mid-range zoom lenses and a street photography-friendly 18mm f/2.8—are also being introduced. The price? About a third the cost of an M-series Leica.

The Leica CL digital joins the Leica TL2 in the Leica lineup of APS-sensor L-mount interchangeable lens cameras. A major upgrade over the TL2 is the CL’s introduction of a high-resolution eye-level electronic viewfinder. A glance at the specs reveals a great similarity between the CL and the Sony A6500. (In fact, the 24MP APS-C sensor specs out almost exactly the same on all three models. That’s good; the sensor has been rated the best in its class.) Built on a magnesium-alloy chassis, the body is clad in leather over metal, with logically-placed controls. The compact body makes it an ideal choice for travel photography.
The Leica CL seems ready to fill an important niche—a compact interchangeable-lens camera designed to Leica specs that’s more affordable than the (let’s be honest) sky-high cost of an M. Since it is an autofocus camera, is also an attractive option for travel street photographers and others who may have trouble mastering the M’s tab-based manual focus. Since the L-series lenses being introduced along with the camera are bona-fide Leicas, users get the benefit of Leica’s outstanding optics.
Unlike M’s, the CL is ready to transfer images over built-in Wi-Fi and is compatible with iOS and Android devices. This capability also allows for wireless remote control with compatible portable devices, which can double as remote electronic viewfinders. Users can set shutter speed and aperture, and control the shutter release from their device.
The CL uses the Leica L-Mount, a bayonet mount which is compatible with Leica TL and SL-mount lenses. The camera joins an ecosystem that now has seven lenses, including four primes and three zooms. Leica M rangefinder and R SLR lenses can also be used via an adapter.
New Pancake Lens
Along with the CL, Leica introduced the Leica Elmarit-TL 18mm f/2.8 APSH. The equivalent of a 27mm lens on a 35mm-sensor camera, this compact pancake lens is claimed to be the smallest on the market for APS-C cameras. It measures only 0.81 inches thick and weighs a feathery 2.8 ounces. Closest focus is approximately a foot, and it accepts E39 filters.
