Review Summary

This cinema camera is absolutely incredible. My first professional cinema quality cameras were the FS7 and FS5 M2, and for the last few years I have been shooting on a mix of R5's and the R3. After years away, the box style cinema camera was calling me back, so I began my search. When I heard that canon was releasing this camera and the price point, I knew I had to give it a shot. I am so glad that I did. Making excellent video is certainly possible on mirrorless cameras, and even preferred in certain situations, but these box style cameras bring connectivity and handheld operation to new levels. I love everything about the C400 so far. I have shot commercial talking heads, high fashion, weddings, and narrative content in a mix of controlled and uncontrolled lighting environments. The results are excellent. It also matches with little effort to the R5 and R3 when shot in clog 3. Mini XLR's haven't caused me any headaches as the adapters are very cheap and easily obtainable. The use of USB-C for the monitor and grip is excellent. I love my RF glass paired with the built in ND. If you are in the canon ecosystem, there is simply nothing better. You will appreciate the attention to detail and amazing capabilities of this camera, no matter the situation you may find yourself shooting in. CANON: please open the USB-C monitor out to enable 3rd part monitor control.

What sets the Canon EOS C400 6K Cinema Camera with RF 24-105mm f/2.8 L IS USM Z Lens apart is its groundbreaking blend of innovation, versatility, and superior imaging quality. This full-frame, RF-mount cinema camera is engineered for limitless creativity, featuring Canon's newly-developed 6K full-frame Back-Illuminated Stacked CMOS sensor. This sensor not only offers exceptionally low noise but also enhances light capturing efficiency, delivering improved 4K image quality through 6K oversampling.
The EOS C400 excels in recording capabilities, supporting 6K/60p Cinema RAW Light and 4K/120p internal recording. It also incorporates Canon's next-generation Dual Pixel CMOS AF II, ensuring precise and fast autofocus. The camera's robust design includes a variety of interfaces such as return input, Ethernet, and Wi-Fi, facilitating seamless control from both Canon and third-party devices. Its compact form factor makes it an ideal choice for diverse production environments.
Paired with the RF24-105mm F2.8 L IS USM Z lens, this camera offers unparalleled optical performance. This lens is the world's first to provide a 24-105mm focal length with a consistent f/2.8 aperture, making it a versatile standard zoom solution. Its ability to zoom beyond the traditional 70mm to a portrait-length 105mm is perfect for applications ranging from weddings and events to photojournalism and studio work. The lens also supports an optional Power Zoom Adapter PZ-E2, enhancing video operation with smooth and versatile zooming capabilities.
The EOS C400's sensor supports Super 35mm and Super 16 crop modes, allowing for flexible lens usage. A December 2024 firmware update introduces a 1.5x anamorphic de-squeeze display assist, optimizing the camera for anamorphic lens shooting. The camera's triple-base ISO settings (800, 3200, and 12,800) ensure stunning imagery across various lighting conditions, maximizing the sensor's dynamic range.
Recording options are extensive, with the ability to capture up to 6K 60P Cinema RAW Light in multiple modes, and standard XF-AVC codec recording in 10-bit 4:2:2. The C400 also supports new XF-AVC S and XF-HEVC S formats, offering efficient file management and metadata preservation. The camera's CFexpress Type B and SD card slots allow for simultaneous recording, even in RAW, with proxy options available.
The built-in mechanical ND filters provide up to ten stops of filtration, essential for maintaining depth of field across lighting conditions. The improved Dual Pixel CMOS AF II, combined with EOS Intelligent Tracking and Recognition, ensures high-performance subject detection and tracking, even in challenging scenarios.
The RF24-105mm F2.8 L IS USM Z lens features eleven aperture blades for rich bokeh and an iris ring for precise aperture control, enhancing video shooting capabilities. Its optical image stabilization offers up to 5.5 stops of shake correction, which can be extended to 8.0 stops when paired with an EOS R-series camera with IBIS. The lens's Nano USM motors ensure quiet and smooth autofocus, maintaining focus while zooming and suppressing aberration fluctuations.
In summary, the Canon EOS C400 6K Cinema Camera with RF 24-105mm f/2.8 L IS USM Z Lens is a powerhouse of cinematic technology, offering unmatched flexibility, superior image quality, and advanced features for filmmakers and photographers alike.
