To get the internet in and around your home, you need two devices: an internet modem and an internet router. The oversimplified way to think about the difference between a router and a modem is that a modem gets the internet into your home, while a router distributes it around your home. A router can provide your home with WiFi, but a modem is what connects that WiFi to the internet.
What is a router?
An internet router distributes the internet—routes it, if you will—throughout your home. They typically have both wired ethernet connections as well as antennas to broadcast WiFi. Most routers now have multiple WiFi frequencies (2.4 and 5Ghz), as well as multiple protocols, aka tech “languages,” like 802.11a/b/g/ac.
Broadly speaking, the higher the letter or letter combo on the router, the greater the speed between your device and the router. “B” is slower than “AC” for instance, though there are many factors that impact overall network speed. If your tablet or phone is capable of, say, 802.11AX, it’s good to get a router that can do the same, since that will allow faster speeds. Generally speaking, routers are backwards-compatible with older wireless devices that use older protocols and will list which kinds of devices they can handle in their specs.
Getting a faster/better router can improve your surfing and download speeds, but not as much as a faster internet package from your provider.
What is a modem?
Whereas a router distributes the internet in your home, an internet modem is what communicates with the outside world. Modems are a less common item to replace compared to routers. Typically, modems are supplied by an internet provider. However, you can save money by buying your own.
Do you need a router or a modem?
Most internet providers will supply a modem and a router, often within a single device. However, they may also charge you a fee to “rent” this device. Buying your own can save you money in the long run.
You’ll need to make sure the modem is compatible with your internet provider. Routers are more widely compatible.
