What’s a lavalier wireless microphone system?

As the name suggests, a lavalier wireless microphone system is a multi-part device that consists of a microphone/transmitter and a base station/receiver. The small transmitter and battery pack sit with the performer, like in a pocket or clipped to a belt. A thin cable connects that to a small microphone, which is usually clipped to a lapel or collar.

The receiver then sits somewhere backstage, and connects to the PA or mixing board just like any other microphone. Most receivers can also connect directly to cameras for easy on-location recording.

One, dual, or more?

Most lavalier systems come with a single transmitter and a single receiver. Others come with two or more transmitters. It’s almost always easier to have a single receiver and multiple transmitters if you regularly need to mic more than one person. If you need to mic up a lot of people, or you have multiple wireless audio systems, make sure the frequencies don’t overlap to avoid potential interference issues.

Analog or digital?

Generally speaking, there are two types of lavalier wireless microphone systems: analog and digital. While analog is the older technology, it's also well known and usually very robust. Digital systems operate at the same 2.4 Ghz as Wi-Fi, and it’s a newer tech. It also may have better sound quality, but it isn’t always the best choice for challenging environments.

You may see lavalier wireless microphone systems that connect via Bluetooth, which is the same technology used in wireless headphones. These models are much shorter in range, often not much more than line-of-sight, and they’re not ideal for a stage or other large venue.
