Video Switcher Boards & Video Switches
Video switcher boards and video switches let you send multiple sources to one or more displays. On the consumer side, video switches can help you permanently connect more devices to a TV, when your TV has limited inputs. This means no more swapping HDMI cables to watch your favorite shows after playing Xbox, for instance.
On the commercial side, video switcher boards take that idea to a whole new level. Like a command center for TV production, they can take video content from multiple sources and send it to several displays, recorders, or push it out for broadcast.
Switchers vs splitters vs matrix
A video switcher, video splitter, and video matrix are all similar devices with slightly different features.
Video switchers
If you have several sources, and you want to watch them all on one TV, you want a video switcher. These have multiple inputs and a single output. For example, if you have a Blu-ray player, a PlayStation 5, and a cable box (3 sources), but your TV only has 2 HDMI inputs, you can use a switcher to connect them all to your TV.
Video splitters
If you have one source, and you want to send it to multiple displays, you need a video splitter. These typically have a single input and multiple outputs.
Matrix switchers
A matrix, also called a routing switcher or videohub, is like a combination of a splitter and a switcher. A matrix switcher has multiple inputs and multiple outputs, letting you choose what source goes to what TV.
Matrix or routing switchers are typically much more elaborate than basic video switchers. They’re more commonly used in commercial situations, and are often controlled by video switcher boards.
Video switcher boards and controllers
Broadcast and commercial video systems need to switch between sources fast and send it to multiple outputs and displays. Adorama sells video switcher boards for production studios of all sizes, from industry-expert brands like BlackMagic, Datavideo, and Roland.
Types of video switcher boards & video switches
The most common types of switcher boards and switches are for HDMI. This is the connection found in nearly all consumer video electronics, from TVs to game consoles. On the commercial and broadcast TV side, it’s far more common to require SDI, often in 3G, 6G, or 12G-SDI forms. For connecting multiple computer monitors, Adorama also sells DisplayPort video switches.
