Questions & Answers

Shopper : difference between hard and soft edges?MICHAEL G : In a sense, a filter with either a hard or soft edge is doing the same thing as HDR. You are trying to balance the exposure between the brighter sky and the darker land. Without the filter either the sky will be way overexposed or the land will be way underexposed. The soft edge gives a more pleasing and natural boundary between the sky and the land if that boundary is not razor flat. How often do you find a dead flat horizon line? The hard edge requires a very precise positioning of the filter and the camera so the edge of the filter is dead on the horizon line. It can have its uses, if you can afford both get them. If not, go with the soft, it's more versatile. Or just try HDR to see if you can get the balanced exposure you want without a filter.SARAH F : Hard or Soft defines how quickly the filter changes from the darkest portion of the filter to the clear portion. "Hard" makes the change more rapidly from the darkest part to the lightest part, and "Soft" is a very gradual transition. In practice, a hard edge is great on telephoto lenses and for landscapes with a defined horizon. Soft edge is good for wide angles and scenes where the horizon may not be as well defined (tall trees, etc).SKIP O : Soft edge filters have a more gradual shift to the darker part of the filter. They are generally better suited to shooting cityscapes and landscapes that have uneven horizons, such as buildings or mountains. Hard edge filter change rather quickly to the darker part of the filter and are best suited for landscapes such as bodies of water or flatter types of horizons.FLORIAN C : A hard edge GND is very useful for when the horizon is relatively straight such as over the ocean, lake or flat land/desert. So it comes in handy for sunrises, early morning/late afternoon shots and sunsets. Soft edge GNDs have a transition area from the darker top to the edge and are useful for landscapes where the horizon is varied such as with different leveled peaks of mountains. Hope this info helps.jan b : A hard edge filter makes its transition between dark and clear VERY quickly. They are used primarily for conditions where there is a distinct horizon line. On the other hand, soft grads transition gradually. I prefer them 9 times out of 10.A RONALD G : The difference between a hard and soft edged filter is the distance over which the graduation from dark to light occurs. With a hard edge the drop off is abrupt. With a soft edge the fall off is gradual. There is a lot of difference among manufactures in how gradual the fall off is. Some are so gradual that there seems hardly any point to using the filter because it is only sufficiently dark at the very top. For something like taking pictures in Times Square or anything with a sharp division between light and dark, one needs an abrupt transition, i.e.. hard edge. Some of the filter manufacturers have pictures of the filter so one can see exactly where and how gradual the gradation is for their filters. I would suggest looking throughout the web for pictures of this sort before you buy. My experience is that if one does not need two or more stops of neutral density there is no point to a graduated filter because one can create the same effect in Lightroom or Photoshop without introducing too much noise. From this point of view, the .9 (three stops) is a good choice.PATRICK D : The hard edge is a hard transition from tinted to clear - suitable for shooting seascapes or other landscapes with a flat horizon. The soft is a gradual transition suitable for any landscape with trees, mountains or uneven terrain on the horizon. If in doubt, and can only buy one, get the soft edge.....it's much more versatile.

Lee filters - highest quality accessory for creativity and light management.

Lee filters are brilliant. A set of grads is essential for any serious field photographer. They have a gorgeous look. Nicely packaged, too. Lots of good YouTube guides for the uninitiated. Optical filters certainly look better than the software generated effects. Unless you prefer that electro-hype look.

These filters are easy to use and work beautifully! Still getting used to using them as they are my first set. Love the fact that I don’t have to use Lightroom to fix my skies!

Seascapes favorite

This filter is great for shooting seascapes or flat horizons in hard light conditions. Great filter. No visible or noticeable color cast. I changed my Formatt Hitech for this.

The only filter you need

If you want to be on budget with your landscape filter kit then buy just two of them: a hard grad 0.6 and a soft grad 0.6. They will be the only filter you will really need and use (apart from a polarizer). I highly recommend Lee filters. They produce no visible ir noticeable color cast. I just love mine.

More useful than I thought

The first time I tried using this specific filter was in Myanmar on a photography workshop tour. The improvement in sunset shots was impressive. Purchased a set when I got home. Have been playing with sunsets on windy days when there is a lot of cloud cover. The slower shutter speeds make it possible to let the clouds create interesting patterns behind the silhouetted subjects. Highly recommend.

Solid filter, very large

This is a great filter if you have large lenses or very wide lenses. But be aware it probably is too large for normal smaller lenses, and the shading is very subtle. It is a first-class, well made piece of kit. But not an obvious thing for everyday photos with standard lenses. Might be better to get a smaller filter with more obvious shading.

Works better than anything else

I used this product to take pictures in Times Square. The idea being to reduce the bright lights of the neon so that the people on the street can be seen. An example is attached. That picture used both a soft and hard filter mounted in the holder. However, one looks like an idiot with this bulky object attached to one's camera. In Times Square, idiots pass unnoticed. I doubt that that is true elsewhere.

Great results!

Brilliant filter that offers true ND. Time will tell if it stands up to regular usage. The Hard Edge filter is a bit more specific than the soft edge filter because of its effect on the subject matter. Its great for sea scapes or flat landscapes but use the soft for undulating landscapes or exposer balance. This Hard edge filter is perfect for your telephoto lenses because it applies more like a Soft edge filter (if this is what you after). I've found the Hard edge is a little restricting to use when rotated because the Hard edge can be noticed (depending on subject) as apposed to the soft edge which feathers the exposure. If you know how to use it, It can offer exceptional results! Also comes with a nice pouch... but like most of these accessories, you don't use them if you have the right camera bag.

High Quality

Not much to say except it came and works as expected. Optically excellent, like other Lee filters. I see no color shifting or other problems when stacked with a Hitech .9 Hard GND.

Solid filter but prefer the 0.9

Pros: Solid filter, neutral colour, fits securely into the Lee Foundation Kit Cons: Creates lens flare, not as useful as the 0.9 ND grad

Lee Neutral Density .9 Graduated Hard Fi

It does the job well. Some good thinking when using it really helps. It must be position in front of your lens and you must be looking through your viewfinder or LCD to see what it is doing. Once in position fire the shutter.

Are you looking to capture stunning landscapes with perfectly balanced exposures The Neutral Density 0.9 Graduated Filter with a Hard Edge is your professional-grade solution. This 100x150mm resin filter is designed to selectively reduce light entering the lens, allowing photographers to manage high-contrast scenes with ease. The 0.9 density provides a 3-stop reduction in light, making it ideal for capturing dynamic skies without overexposing the brighter areas.

Crafted with precision, this filter features a hard edge transition that is particularly effective for scenes with a defined horizon, such as seascapes or flat landscapes. The abrupt transition from neutral density to clear is engineered to deliver a natural and subtle effect, ensuring your images retain full detail across the frame.

Lee Filters, a brand synonymous with high-quality and durable photography accessories, manufactures this filter to meet the exacting standards of professional photographers. Its effectiveness is evident in the ability to use wider apertures and slower shutter speeds, thus achieving a shallower depth of field and that sought-after blurred background in portrait photography.

Versatile in its application, the hard edge is recommended for use with normal to telephoto lenses, where it applies more like a soft edge filter, offering a gentle graduation that complements the focal length. However, for those shooting undulating landscapes or seeking a more feathered exposure balance, a soft edge variant may be preferred.

Incorporating this filter into your photography kit enhances your creative control, allowing you to produce images with great colors and full detail, as noted by satisfied users. Whether you're capturing the first light at the beach or framing a dramatic sunset, this filter is an indispensable tool for achieving exceptional results.

Included with this filter is a protective pouch, providing convenient storage and protection for your investment. Embrace the power of a hard edge graduated neutral density filter and elevate your photography to professional heights with the Neutral Density 0.9 Graduated Filter, Hard Edge, 100x150mm - Resin by Lee Filters.
