I use this on my Nikon Z6ii when I want a more compact carry option. I'm a big fan of the 40mm field of view so no problem there. Image quality seems very solid to me when stopped down 1-2 f stops. I have noticed of late that it's image quality of closer-in portions of your photograph do suffer a bit. I recently compared this on my Z6ii to my Z28mm f2.8 on my Z50, and the 28mm's close up image quality on the DX Z50 was actually better than the 40mm f2's on my Z6ii.

Excellent lens for the money. Just wish that it wasn't stripped quite so far down in features to hit the price point. I would like a metal lens mount at a minimum, and a standard thread on the front with a bayonet for a lens hood would be great.

One of Nikkor's Best, very lightweight, great for street shooting. Used this on my Z5 last weekend for my grandkids bday party and pictures turn out nice. Bokeh is very smooth and round. Nikon Z40 F2 Isa no brainer lens. Bought it at Adorama for a good price and the quick delivery is much appreciated.

A great lens with gorgeous vintage styling. The "nifty fifty" is great, but I'd argue 40mm is just a bit more versatile. This lens is very compact and great for travel!

I needed an easier to use lens to use with my everyday Z6 ii. I did some research on youtube and decided to go ahead and purchase this lens. What a great lens in a small package. And affordable! Adorama always has what I'm looking for in stock. Great job!

This is the only lens I've had since buying my new Z6ii and I have to say it was the best thing I could have done, going straight into a primes lens with such a low F-stop has been a dream. It works well and gets the job done

I always wanted to have a 42mm focal length lens, (as it is what the eye sees ) and the F2 helps capture the available light without being too large. I shot a band the other night, and the images are stunning and compliments the ZF

This lens works great on my full frame Z7 and now my Z8. But on my Z50 you have to be very careful to keep your hand steady. For me that means that for photos it is fine, but video without image stabilization it is difficult on the unstabilized body.

I just got this lens as it's always been one of my favorite focal lengths with the perfect speed of f/2 in a lightweight package. I'll take some test shot later and expect it to do reasonably well. My biggest complaint is that the lens mount is plastic like their entry level DSLR kit lenses, not the hardened chrome plated brass used in lenses worthy of the professional moniker "Nikkor". I would have gladly paid a few $$ more for a lens with a metal mount as I don't know if the plastic lugs over time may chip with extended use thus fouling up my camera. I know it's not an S model lens, but what were you thinking Nikon?

Fantastic lens for it's price. I prefer zooms when "doing work" but if I want to have fun small budget primes are a blast to play with. The quality this lens puts out punches way above it's price class and the field of view is the best all around IMO. 50mm is a little too tight, and 35mm is a little too wide. 40mm is perfect for getting in to tell one story but still have enough background surrounding your subject to put that story into an environment. The feels is a bit light and plasticky but that's part of the price tradeoff, the images are still fantastic. The lens is a bit "girthy" but that comes from the fact that the Nikon Z mount is so huge, the lens is as narrow as it can be without having a flance at the back to widen the rear enough to connect to the mount.

For a relatively inexpensive lens with a plastic (polycarbonate) bayonet my expectations were, um, managed. Positive expectations included light weight and possibly acceptable image quality. Well, it?s all good news with this sleeper lens. Yes, it is light weight, but the image quality is actually excellent. Sharp across frame from F2.8 on, and quite usable without compromise wide open. It demonstrates excellent flare resistance, no chromatic aberrations in actual use, and very much unintimidating for street use. Good character and three-dimensionality in the captures round out a screaming deal, especially at current discounts. You will not be disappointed.

Walking around for street photography, I prefer something more discrete than my 24-70 f2.8. This little gem does the trick. I pre-set it to f8 and grab street candids quickly.

The Z 40mm f2 lens has its definitive place in the Z lens line up primarily winning on size and weight (and perhaps budget). From my limited use, the resolution power and image quality cannot compare with that from Z 35mm f1.8 or Z 50mm f1.8 or the new Z 28-75mm f2.8, as used with Z6II. But I am keeping it ? its size and weight cannot be beat right now by any other Z lens. Compared with shooting stills, it seems to yield better results when shooting video.

Great little lens, i loved the size and speed, unfortunately i didn't like the 40mm range. I prefer either 35 or 50, but couldn't get used to the 40mm, not wide enough.

I love this lens. To me, 40mm is just the right focal length for a good, all-round lens. The compact size and the relatively fast f/2 combine to make this inexpensive lens my favorite. It is sharp at all apertures and produces really nice results.

I recently took this 40mm lens attached to my Z5 on vacation and was blown away with how light it made the whole kit. I could have my Z5 with this 40mm and small flash around my neck all day long with no fatigue whatsoever. The performance wide open is perfect for portraits, stopped down the corners are plenty good for landscapes, just an easy lens to shoot just about anything. The price to performance is stellar.

Happy
By Charley L.
What a fun lens on my Z6. Happy to shoot all day & night at f2. Of course, like any other lens, stop down a stop or two for better corners. I like the color rendition and sharpness. This lens is better than the price indicates. The bokeh is pleasing

So small. So fast. So classic.
Our fast 40mm prime with a cool retro design.
This special edition of our 40mm f/2 prime is more than a lens-it's a shooting style. Fast. In-the-moment. Improvisational. Its compact size and tactile feel make it a smooth operator, and its classic styling elevates the look of any Z camera. Combine that with the great low-light performance, beautiful bokeh and a natural angle of view of the original lens, and you've got a 40mm prime that really is special.
An iconic take on a small, fast, versatile lens.
An iconic design mimicking the look of the lenses once used on Nikon's classic FM cameras.
Bright, natural views. Beautiful bokeh.
Stylish point of view on any Z series camera.
A full-frame standard prime, the NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 (SE) works and looks great on any Z series camera. On full-frame/FX format cameras like Z 6II and Z 5, it covers the sweet spot between 35mm and 50mm. On APS-C size/DX format cameras like Z fc, Z 50 and Z 30, it delivers a 60mm* field of view.
Shoot after hours.
Capture the mood of dimly lit situations with clarity and sharpness, and use faster shutter speeds to freeze action without sacrificing brightness.
Get in close.
Focus as close as 0.96 ft. from your subject and reveal the smallest details, ideal for food shots, plants and much more.
Dramatic depth.
Make your subject stand out against a beautifully blurred background. The shallow depth of field of f/2 is enhanced by the lens' 9 rounded blade diaphragm, creating a natural bokeh effect.
Nothing weighing you down.
At just 1.8 inches long and 6 ounces, you'll forget the lens is even there. It doesn't extend or retract, so it's always ready. Take it wherever you go as your main walk-around lens or as a lightweight second lens.
Great for video.
With its natural field of view, suppressed focus breathing, near-silent autofocus and a 9-rounded-blade iris that can be smoothly opened and closed using the click-less control ring, the NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 (SE) is outstanding for videos of all types, from vlogs to cinematic films.
Fast, reliable focus.
A new high-torque stepping motor operates at blazing fast speeds in near silence, whether using Eye-Detection AF or continuous subject tracking.
Customizable control.
The smooth click-less control ring can be customized for the way you shoot. Use it for precise manual focusing or to adjust aperture, ISO or exposure compensation.
Dust and drip resistant.
The lens barrel and all moving parts are designed carefully considering dust- and drip-resistant performance with sealing that prevents dust and water droplets from entering the lens. The lens is not guaranteed to be dust- and drip-resistant in all situations and under all conditions.
Technology
Aspherical Lens
A lens with a curved, non-spherical surface. Used to reduce aberrations and enable a more compact lens size. Aspherical lenses minimize coma and other types of lens aberrations, even when used at the widest aperture. They are particularly useful in correcting distortion in wide-angle lenses and help contribute to a lighter, more compact design by reducing the number of standard (spherical) elements necessary. Aspherical lens elements correct these distortions by continuously changing the refractive index from the center of the lens.
Super Integrated Coating
Nikon Super Integrated Coating is Nikon's term for its multilayer coating of the optical elements in NIKKOR lenses.
IF Lens
A NIKKOR lens in which only the internal lens group shifts during focusing. Thus, IF NIKKORS do not change in size during AF operation, allowing for compact, lightweight lenses capable of closer focusing distances. These lenses will be designated with the abbreviation IF on the lens barrel.
Stepping Motor
NIKKOR Z lenses use a stepping motor for fast, accurate, smooth, quiet autofocus with reduced wobbling. This quiet drive system makes the lenses ideal for use when shooting video.
Electromagnetic Diaphragm Mechanism
An electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism in the lens barrel provides highly accurate electronic diaphragm or aperture blade control when using auto exposure during continuous shooting.
