Good for the money

Not bad for the money. Nice and sharp at low zoom but soft as hell at 300mm

Best money I've spent

Easily as sharp as my 70-200 f2.8 and sharper than my 17-55 f2.8. Wonderful lens. Have no doubts, just buy this lens, you won't find a sharper lens for twice the price

Sports will never look the same!

This lens works great with my D700 in various conditions. My favorite use for this lens is soccer and football. At 300 it keeps you in the action while the f4 is fast enough to keep you shutter speed lightning quick freezing the action from every play. I would suggest this lens not only on it's performance but it's price as well. When you balance the two it is an incredible value. The only con is the weight. Once you have a steady tripod or monopod however this is no longer a concern.

Impressed

I bought this lens for rodeo event photography and have been very happy with it. I typically used a Nikon 80-200mm f2.8, but find that I can't cover larger arenas. This lens gives me great coverage. What I have found is that I need to lock onto my subject early and track it before shooting. If I lose the subject, the Sigma will back focus pretty quickly. When I occasionally get a shot that is out of focus, I can sense this and get back on my subject quickly. So I would offer that it does work well for action photography. The limitations I described are common in my experience with other lenses. Given the range and the price, I can't find a competitor. If my photo sales are any indicator, this lens is a TOP performer. I would and have recommended this lens.

It was not the Lens

I wrote a review and I would like to up date it. The review said the lens was slow and locked at Min. fouscs. After getting a "new" D200 body and haveing it set up the same as my "old" D200. the lens works GREAT and no longer locks but goes back to inf. and locks in sharp. Looks like my old body need some work.

Could be better

It's a good lens but not the best for fast moveing like airshows or sports. Lens does not search if it can not get a lock on fouscs and it will stay a minal fouces and had it manle move it to infin. With a tripod and something that is not moveing it will work great.

excellent, beautiful, fast lens

this is a very useful lens for any occasion, it's easy to use and easy to mount on the camera. This is a wonderful tool and fun to work with, the results are amazing more than I expected. the only thing I don't like is that the images need more contrast, but it's not a big deal because that can be fixed in photoshop. if you are thinking in buying a lens in this range let me tell you that there is no better lens than this one, this lens it's worth it for the money you pay for it, this is the best deal you can get, go for it.

High quality/cost ratio.

I use this lens almost exlusively for wildlife photography. I've used it extensively for photographing birds in flight and it focuses quickly, quietly, and accurately. The lens zooms smoothly with just enough friction to feel right. Internal zoom and focus make handling simple. I shoot a Nikon with DX format chip and this lens is very sharp across the entire frame. You can't beat this lens for the quality in this price range.

"Long and Fast, With Enough Light"

The Sigma 100-300 f4 is an all-star for long shots and nature, provided you have enough light. Long and heavy, this lens can help you capture deer, birds and fill a frame with the subject. But lacking image stabilization you need to secure the lens. With a 1.4 extender or in low light a tripod is a must. I've gotten gorgeous shots of woodpeckers and other birds at our feeders, but only in direct sunlight. Tracking a deer is only for the very committed and strong as the lens is over three pounds or about five pounds with the D200. Trees make great tripods- and places to brace my tired arms. Manual focus is mandatory as there is too little light for autofocus in my backyard or neighboring woods in this New Jersey winter light. Autofocus hunts at 300mm in low light and camera shake obligates a tripod or nearby tree. The great news is that this lens really shines in brightly lit areas. Auto focus is spot on and the pictures are crystal clear. Depth of field is better if you can stop down so you can get more than the bird's eye in focus. You can also stack this lens for micro work if you have ample time and patience. Depth of field is nil at the extremes but flat objects show great detail. I'll leave the quality of glass and chromatic abberation measurements to the pros. For me, the Sigma 100-300mm outperforms when there is enough light and a cooperative subject. The lens, however, is not for the casual or impatient photographer. It requires care and dedication to take a great pictures at these focal lengths so be forewarned. Sloppy handling will yield blurry results: Patience and experimentation will give you great pics.

Fully compatible with all Nikon Digital SLR cameras including the D40 and D40X, this telephoto zoom lens provides a large F4 aperture at all focal lengths. The new multi layer lens coating and lens design reduce flare and ghosting, a common problem with digital cameras, and also creates an optimum color balance through the entire zoom range.

Two Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass elements in the front lens group and another two in the rear group offer excellent correction of chromatic aberration. High optical performance is demonstrated throughout the entire zoom range. The internal focusing and zooming mechanism do not change the lens' overall length, assuring ease of handling and operation. A rotating tripod mount can be conveniently detached if required. The Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) ensures a silent, high-speed AF function as well as full-time manual focusing capability

Since the front of the lens does not rotate, a circular polarizing filter and Petal-type hood can be easily attached. High-speed focusing is possible when this lens is used with dedicated APO 1.4x EX tele-converter. With the optional APO 1.4x EX tele-converter, this lens becomes a 140mm to 420mm F5.6 AF zoom. With the APO 2.0x EX tele-converter, a manual focus zoom lens from 200mm to 600mm F8 is achieved.
