Shopper : Is this lens sealed against moisture and dust?JIM B : Not sure.ANDREW R : Unfortunately no, I don't believe so. Dust/moisture protection is not indicated.
johan k : Is the lens good for shooting out of hand?JOHN L : Hello, I have not handheld this lens but I use it on a monopod quite a bit.Sharp images with 1.4 teleconverter too! Shooting birds & other wildlife.I've been very happy with this lens.ANDREW R : That would depend on your shooting and lighting conditions as well as your subject matter. A brightly lit scene should allow for high enough shutter speeds to minimize motion blur from hand holding the lens. Bear in mind that the longer the focal length, the higher the shutter speed you'll need to keep the scene reasonably sharp. In this case, anything less than 1/250 sec would likely require a support such as a tripod or monopod.

Sigma 300 f 2.8 fore Nikon

It is a fast sharp lens, must use Sigma converters with it, the lock on the focus ring easy to unlock , then you get an error message from nikon cameras, once relocked no problem

Great wildlife lens

In looking for a cost effective, high quality lens for wildlife & sports, I settled on the Sigma. While not perhaps quite the overall glass quality of a comparable Nikon lens, the cost difference more than makes up for it. Photos are sharp and, when used with the 2X tele-converter, I'm able to shoot most wildlife that I find. A great lens for the price.

Very capable lens

I bought this lens mainly for wildlife photography. I use it mostly with the Sigma APO 2x teleconverter and I get some very sharp pictures. Occasionally I wish I had image stabilization but with the fast shutter speeds I use most of the time I do not miss it much. I use it with a monopod except for in flight birds. I had to get a new monopod head and the only heavy duty one I could find was by Really Right Stuff.

Great wildlife lens

A versatile, fast aperture telephoto lens for both digital and film SLR cameras. Two ELD glass elements reduce chromatic aberration to a minimum and also ensure sharp, quality images of high contrast.

The new multi layer lens coating reduces flare and ghost, which is a common problem with digital SLR cameras. The overall length of the lens does not changeduring focusing, ensuring convenient handling and ease of use.

The HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) models provide fast, silent AF function as well as full- time manual focus override. A drop-in 46mm filter holder in the rear part of the lens barrel can be rotated to facilitate the use of filters, including a polarizing filter,

Simply adding an APO teleconverter (optional extra), means that this lens can be used as a 420..m ..4 AF ultra-telephoto lens with a 1.4x Ex teleconverter, or a 600mm F5.6 AF ultra-telephoto lens with a 2x teleconverter.
