Great performance, but heavy.

In another life with another brand (Pentax), my favorite travel rig was a set of compact, high quality crop primes (15/20/40/70)-faster and much lighter around the neck than a zoom. Sony has put together with the 24/40/50 2.5G FF lenses with a similar philosophy. I bought this Sigma to add a compact tele to my compact G lenses for the A7RC. The 90 performs superbly and adds the Tele end I used to have with a 70 on APS-C but now with FF capability and terrific cropping potential of a 61mp sensor. The only catch is that the Sigma is made of metal, and it weighs twice as much and is twice the size of the compact Sonys. It makes it harder to put this kit in a compact waist pack or photo vest pocket, and too often, the Sigma gets left at the hotel. (It's also why the metal, massively heavy Sigma 135/1.8 never comes along on vacation.) Also, kudos for giving me an aperture ring, but why no hold button? Programmable controls on the lens are much appreciated with Sony's compact bodies. If this lens were more like the compact Sony G series and less like the old metal Zeiss FE lenses, I'd give it a perfect 5.

Really nice 90mm

Pretty much perfect for what it is. The only thing I'd like to see different is having a lock to keep the aperture ring in 'A' or not, it can get bumped.

Perfect lens?

This lens is sharp starting wide open and going through the aperture range. I use it on a Sony A7R II. It also reproduces colors very accurately. Autofocus is quiet and quick. The build quality is exemplary, having an all-metal barrel and hood. It is also compact and lightweight.

A Small Wonder

This lens is truly outstanding. It's small and light weight. The image quality is very sharp all the way through the apretures. The color rendition is very accurate. The bokeh is very pleasing when shot wide open.

Capture every inspiring moment
Introducing Sigma's all-new, mid-telephoto I series prime for mirrorless systems. This compact 90mm F2.8 optic is versatile, well-built and offers stunning optical performance, making it perfect for portraits, close-ups, weddings and events.

A brand new 90mm F2.8 DG DN | Contemporary premium compact prime has been added to Sigma's growing I series range. It joins four existing I series primes as well as the all-new 24mm F2 DG DN | Contemporary, offering superb optical performance, a bright F2.8 aperture, an all-metal build and a manual aperture ring. Designed especially for mirrorless systems it feels well-balanced on modern full-frame bodies, and boasts exceptional resolving power that can keep up with the latest ultra-high-resolution cameras.

With its versatile mid-telephoto focal length, the lens is the longest I series lens yet, but remains remarkably compact and light so that it is ideal for day-to-day use. It is fully-optimized for mirrorless systems with ultra-fast and accurate AF performance, and it boasts outstanding optical capabilities. The rich, smooth bokeh makes for attractive backgrounds, which is perfect for portraits, and the minimum focusing distance of 50cm allows photographers to get closer to their subject.

This high-quality, everyday lens is able to bring scenes to life with its beautiful rendering and ultra-sharp optics, all in a portable, robust and tactile lens body.

I series Premium Compact Primes for mirrorless users
The Sigma I series features full-frame-compatible lenses that offer mirrorless users a new and better alternative, both in the experience of shooting with the lens and in the impressive results it is able to achieve.

One of the key advantages of mirrorless cameras is their smaller form-factor, and this new 90mm optic is designed to be perfectly matched to these more compact systems without sacrificing performance. This combination of superb optical quality with exceptional portability, not previously possible with DSLR systems, will bring new opportunities to this and future generations of photographers.

New standards of optical performance for the Contemporary line
The Sigma 90mm F2.8 DG DN | Contemporary boasts exceptional optical performance with a ultra-high resolving power to match the latest high-resolution mirrorless cameras.

The lens is built using the very latest optical technology, and includes five SLD glass elements. This helps to reduce axial chromatic aberration that cannot be corrected in-camera, allowing the lens to achieve high resolution and clear image quality with no color bleeding. A high-precision glass molded aspherical lens provides both high resolution and beautiful bokeh. Photographers can enjoy shooting with soft, large bokeh without coloration and this is something that only a full-frame lens is able to deliver.

The lens also utilizes the camera's optical correction functionality, which is an advantage of mirrorless systems, Sigma's optical designers were therefore able to concentrate on correcting aberrations that can only be corrected by the optical design, thereby improving rendering performance and reducing the size and weight of the lens.

With a minimum focusing distance of 50cm and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:5, close-up macro-style photography is possible. The lens highlights the subject, allowing photographers to focus in on fine details or create more abstract compositions. The AF drive system incorporates a quiet, high-speed stepping motor, making it suitable for still images as well as video recording.

Use of high-precision aspherical glass molded lenses
The surface of molds for glass molding, which is a process that forms optical components by pressing glass materials at high temperatures, requires ultra-high precision. Sigma uses high-precision molds whose surfaces are controlled with an accuracy of +/-5 nanometers (0.000005 mm) or smaller. High precision aspherical glass molded lenses archives both good aberration correction and compact lens size.

Exceptional I series build quality with a compact form-factor
All I series lenses have an all-metal construction. The precision-cut aluminum parts not only give the barrel a sleek, stylish finish, but provide superb durability that improves the quality of the entire product. Metal materials are also used in internal structures that slide with the operation ring for added robustness. These high-precision components crafted with Sigma's cutting-edge metalworking technology are also used in Sigma's CINE LENS lineup for professional cinematographers and provide a tactile, ergonomic feel that make the lens a pleasure to use.

Magnetic metal lens cap
The I series lenses are accompanied by a dedicated magnetic metal lens cap, in addition to a normal plastic cap. This dedicated metal cap clips to the front surface of the lens magnetically. It is no exaggeration to say that this meticulously crafted cap represents the finishing touch for the I series.

Inner focus system
To increase stability, this lens configuration uses movable internal lens elements that adjust focus without changing the length of the lens barrel.

Stepping Motor
The lens is capable of smooth, quiet and high-speed AF made possible by a stepping motor, as well as supports Face/Eye Detection AF and video AF.

Compatible with Lens Aberration Correction
Matching the optical characteristics of the lens, this function performs in-camera corrections of peripheral illumination, chromatic aberrations, distortion, and more, to further enhance image quality.

Super Multi-Layer Coating
Sigma's own Super Multi-Layer Coating suppresses flare and ghosting by preventing reflections with in the lens. All lenses in the current Sigma range feature this original technology. In digital cameras, flare and ghosting may also be caused by reflections between the image sensor and lens surfaces. Here too, Sigma's Super Multi-Layer Coating is highly effective, assuring images of outstanding contrast.

Aperture ring
Aperture ring, designed to help users work intuitively

Focus Mode Switch
Using this switch, it is possible to switch the focus mode between AF and MF.

Mount with Dust and Splash Resistant Structure
The lens mount incorporates rubber sealing to protect the mount from dust and water drops.

Exclusive low-dispersion glass
The degree to which light is refracted by glass depends on the light's wavelength. This fact causes different colors of light to focus at slightly different points. The result is chromatic aberration, the color fringing that is particularly noticeable in telephoto lenses. Most chromatic aberration can be removed by combining a high-refractivity convex lens element with a low-refractivity concave element. Yet residual chromatic aberration known as "secondary spectrum" may still remain.

To minimize this secondary spectrum, which can be a serious issue with conventional lenses, Sigma lenses feature up to three types of exclusive low-dispersion glass offering superior performance: ELD (Extraordinary Low Dispersion), SLD (Special Low Dispersion) and FLD ("F" Low Dispersion). In particular, FLD glass offers ultra-low dispersion in combination with high transmittance and the anomalous dispersion characteristics of fluorite. Meticulous deployment of these types of exclusive low-dispersion glass and optimization of power distribution gives Sigma lenses superlative image rendition undiminished by residual chromatic aberration.
