The 4 x 5.65" IR85 Filter from Tiffen is a unique combination of two of Tiffen's most popular filters targeted towards today's hi-definition photographer. The IR filter helps control color shift from IR contamination in digital videography irrespective of whether you are using a neutral density filter with an HDSLR or HD video camera. The CCD or CMOS sensor of a digital camera is inherently susceptible to infrared contamination, even when the manufacturer attempts to reduce this problem by adding an infrared absorbing filter on top of the image sensor. Blacks become magenta and greens a muddy brown.
Infrared light focuses at a different focal length than visible light; therefore, your images may seem a bit out of focus as well. The more light you cut, the more IR contamination; therefore, whether you're reducing light in general or wish to create a shallow depth of field for a cinematic look, the more IR contamination you will encounter. Tiffen has addressed this problem by offering their exclusive line of their Full Spectrum Water White IR filters.
The Tiffen IR filters do not have a sharp cutoff at the infrared wavelengths; therefore the wide color gamut these sensors record is not compromised. The result is vibrant colors and no IR contamination, with crisp clean images that only Water White glass can deliver. These filters also provide a greater latitude when editing in post production and are ideal for 8 byte compressed color.
85 Color Conversion: What do you do when you must take some photos outdoors and all you have left is tungsten film Using tungsten film in daylight will produce a bluish cast in the photograph. The 85 series of filters will "bring back", i.e. color balance the tones in your images. This yellow filter is used to correct differences in color temperature between the recording medium (film/video) and the light source.
Water White glass, using Tiffen's ColorCore technology, is characterized by a high transmission quality. Typically, it will transmit 98-99% of the light. It also features an anti-glare and anti-reflective quality that makes it useful in a wide range of uses including the movie theater industry, store and art displays. The glass is virtually defect-free and is becoming more and more prevalent in digital equipment.
