This camera takes the best SD video I have seen, especially when the sun goes down. In dimmly lit stadiums and parties it records just as sharp as if you were outside in the daytime. Lighting is optional, not a necessity. Very impressive low light performance. Great stereo mic sensitivity and pick-up with 16-bit recording. The weight is managable. The matte body finish helps keep the camera clean and free of prints and stains. This camera has loads of adjustments, and manual options and probably more features than most would need. great compatiblity thru i.Link with several video editing software. Some of the tiny switches are a little too close together to use on the fly without looking, but that is a trivial complaint. The biggest flaw is the EVF. You have to position your eye square on the eye cup and look straight down the center of the diopter or the image distorts and blurs, which is distracting at times and can force a "false" focus adjust. It is easier at times to just use the flip-out LCD. Otherwise, if you want the best non-HD image with good sound then this is your camera. We have been using them for years. I logged on to buy another for my business. Pitty they are no longer for sale.

I have put this camera in the hands of high school video students for 4 years and the camera still works as well as the day we purchased the camera. I own 1 for my personal use in my small production company and swear by this camera.

This is a great all around camera for all conditions, specially low light. BUT. The sound recording absolutely sucks. The microphone picks up any slight toch you make to the body of the camera. When you push the record button on and off, the microphone records it as a loud click. If you tild the view finder, the microphone records it as loud as opening a rusty door. Also, in loud conditions, like concerts, the microphone completely distorts the sound like a blown speaker. They need to learn how to attach the microphone to the camera and how to control its range. I expected a LOT more from Sony.

Take Control of Sound and Vision with the DCR-VX2100, offering the brightest video results of all Sony MiniDV models. With its new Advanced HAD progressive scan CCD technology, illumination is improved dramatically, delivering superior low-light performance without the use of infrared technology. By increasing the CCD's sensitivity to light, clearer, brighter video with more lifelike color can be captured, even when recording in dimly lit environments.
Its 58mm aspherical lens and duel-position neutral density filter minimize distortion from standard spherical lenses and compensate for varying lighting situations such as studio lights or direct sunlight.
Additionally, the VX2100 includes a built-in lens cap to protect the enhanced optics package, manual audio control and PCM Digital Stereo Audio in 12 and 16-bit modes, a manual focus and manual zoom ring, built-in color bar generator, 16:9 wide screen recording capability, intelligent accessory shoe, both 12x optical and 48x digital zoom, advanced optical SteadyShot® picture stabilization and up to seven hours of operation with the optional NP-F960 InfoLithium® battery.
