Highly versatile, variable ND filter

I was finally able to capture some photos of the sea crashing on a rocky beach in Maine the way I had wanted to for years when I had this ND filter and my tripod with me. Highly recommended.

Day to Night

Purchased as a gift for my son. It adjusts smoothly from slightly darkened to totally opaque. A good way to begin working with ND filters without having to purchase a whole collection of filters.

Best bang for your buck ND filters

I love hoya filters. They are made with great quality glass and give me no image issues. I have their entire line up for all my different lenses.

outstanding filter

I love Hoya filters. They are 100% worth the price. Don't scrimp on cheapo filters as your photos or video will def suffer. I've used cheaper ones and they are very inconsistent or break easily. You won't go wrong with Hoya.

Workds great, very clear

This works great, no problems with my lens hood over the top. Great price versus some of the designer filters, and every bit as good.

Hoya VND 55mm

For the film makers out there, this is a great deal if you shoot on a lens greater than 35mm. The variable dial action doesn’t slip and it’s easy to dial in for the perfect exposure. I’m just getting started so this was a great deal!

All around good product

Provides much needed reduction in light to control shutter speed. In freezing temperatures, waves appear on the higher end of the density.

Caveat Emptor!

Free shipping was offered and I ordered this a week before I needed it. Adorama chose a carrier known for multi-week deliveries so that by the time I got it there was no longer need for it this year. I complained and let them talk me out of refusing delivery, but got busy with 60-hour photography weeks so time slipped by and I'm stuck with it. I really shouldn't have bought it, and every time I see it in the drawer I'll be angry again. :-(

I appreciate the packaging.

Sturdy and comes with a container, which I appreciate. I bought these after studying a few YouTube demos of ND filters. I settled on this for the aesthetic range it offers. It's sexy.

Must Have Accessory

Love this ND filter for the flexibility and not having to carry multiples in my bag. The perfect accessory for cutting out that extra light to get the look you want. The quality is excellent .

Excellent filter considering it's price.

It's probably the best option for the price.I tried before other brands which suffered from a color cast and impossible to deal with x pattern marks on at least one-third of the steps. This one has only problems where it has an x marked at the end, and the user manual advises about it. Probably there are better options, but not likely at that price point. I would recommend it.

Open up your lens

This has changed my videos overnight. Without a filter, I've struggled to keep an open lens without blowing out my shots. This filter was just what I needed.

Horrible ND Filter

This filter produces a horrible cross vignette on the image when stopped down to the max. Would not recommend.

These variable NDs are a must

I was using really cheap ND filters in the past that had a horrible color cast on my videos. These are a HUGE upgrade! These Variable ND filters are a must! And I don’t notice any extra color grading to my footage.

Well made and functional

I have just started using this lens with both my Sigma and Tamron lenses. It works well with both, although there is some distortion at the maximum setting.

Great tool, Easy to use.

I got this to help with day time long exposure. I had a $60 dollar coupon so I paid only $($) which is a steal! I love how easy this is to use. You literally just screw it on and dial to the exposure you want. I don’t notice any focusing issues at all. So far so good! :)

Mistakenly tried Variable ND Filter

First service was GREAT. The filter although is horrible often I will get a curved X in the center of the picture ruining many shoots. I am working out of town and thought I would try this filter out before taking it to Scotland with me and I am glad I did. Hoys is a good name which is why I tried this but I am going back to Cokin individual ND filters. Is this something I can return or exchange? Worth it

This ND filter is much better than less expensive filters - the dreaded black X doesn't show up until the filter is at its darkest. There is some vignetting at wider angles, but overall, I'm happy with the purchase. I do wish I could use my lens cap while the filter is attached.

good filter

By Louise W.

I was quite pleased with this filter. It seemed sturdy and well-made. It is the first one like this I have used, so I can't compare it to other brands, but it worked quite well giving me clear pictures while photographing waterfalls with longer shutter speeds for the silky water effect, without overexposing them.

Great Quality,

By TAMARA H.

I live in the PNW, and we have amazing water falls here. I needed a good quality Variable ND filter. After a lot of searching I settled on the Hoya 82mm. I use it primarily on my Nikon 24-70mm lens. I like the overall quality of Hoya filters and feel its a good mid range purchase. 10 stops of reduction. Love the image quality. I see a lot of reviewers have an issue with no threads to attach a lens cap to. Since I use this filter for landscapes only, I usually take it off when done. It isn't...

The Hoya Variable Neutral Density (ND) Filter (0.45-2.7ND) uses two polarizing layers to control the amount of light that passes through the filter and into the camera lens. At it's minimum effect the filter passes 1/3 of the light in a scene. That is equal to 1.5 stops on the aperture or shutter speed. At it maximum effect the filter passes just 1/400 of the light in a scene. That is equal to 9 stops on the aperture or shutter speed.

After the filter is mounted on the lens, turning the filter ring between "Min" and "Max" can greatly control the amount of light entering the lens. With the Hoya Variable Neutral Density (ND) Filter (0.45-2.7ND) it is possible to shoot with fast lenses like 50mm f/1.4 lenses wide open at f/1.4 in full sun for a very shallow depth of field. Or, to slow down the shutter speed to where the shutter can be open for several seconds in full sunlight. This is enough to create artistic blurring shots of motion on water, cars, people or almost anything that moves. The creative possibilities are endless.

The Hoya Variable Neutral Density (ND) Filter (0.45-2.7ND) uses high-quality optical glass from Hoya Corporation, the worlds largest optical glass manufacturer and is available in sizes 52mm to 82mm.

For best results Hoya recommends using a tripod when photographing at slow shutter speeds.
