Plustek OpticFilm 7600i SE,

I am absolutely, totally, 100%, impressed with this scanner and software. I used to have Kodachromes outsourced but they were always compromised. I finally have a setup that will produce pictures at least as good as the best digitals. Steep learning curve, but if you have used scanners, it's manageable. Fabulous!

Last Slide Scanner Standing

I am scanning 35mm slides from Quickscan into Photoshop. So far, I am delighted with the results. Someday I will probably try the German softweare. It is a bit slower than my former Nikon Super Coolscan, but, neither unit being a speed demon, I will settle for the beautiful images.

Good results for little money

Bought to replace my Minolta Dimage Elite 5400. Not quite as sharp, but cost less than 1/2 of the Minolta, but scans make really good 11x14's. Silverfast software is great, the isrd feature of Silverfast really cleans up the dust and scratches on slides and b/w negatives, unlike digital ice which will not work on either Kodachromes or b/w negatives

strange colours

There were great reviews of this unit and I have lots of slides from years of shooting transparencies. The software seemed a bit complicated but ok, but I can't get decent looking files. The colours seem quite far off no matter how much I adjust them and almost cartoonish with certain colours, particularly the reds. I love the size the size of the unit and can easily fly with the unit, but alas the results are really just too poor for me.

Good results for the price

Good but not great scanner. Must be used with the supplied Silverfast software. You need a lotof processing power to use thee infrared cleaning process, but it really works well. All in all, not up to the Minolta Dimage 5400( I think the scansfrom the Minolta might be a bit sharper) it replaced, but it is capable of producing professional level scans when using Silverfast

excellent results, not for high volume

Scanner is compact for desktop use. It's easy enough to use. I can't speak for the software provided (Silverfast), though I know it gets good reviews. I already had Vuescan installed and it works perfectly with the scanner. The provided holders can hold four slides or a strip of six negatives, but must be advanced manually, so it requires user interaction for each scan. (This is true of all consumer level slide scanners now.) I've only used it for slides. You have to make sure not to touch the holder while it's scanning -- there's a detent for each position, and it works, but it's not secure enough to hold steady if bumped. Scan results are excellent. Color is good, although as with all scans, you may need to adjust the results. Resolution is excellent. I scanned a couple of slides from my wedding reception (1972) where I had to push the resolution up to 3600dpi to get the best results. At 3600dpi, a girl's hair was much better resolved than at 2400dpi. This indicates that the scanner is able to push the limits of what the clearest 35mm slide contains and extract all the information. Scanning is going to take at least a minute per image, more likely at least two minutes, and more if you check out each one and possibly adjust it. I like the control of having my own scanner, but progress is slow. And yet for the amount of data scanned and stored, it's pretty quick, it's just that you need a lot of pixels to reproduce a good slide. Depending on how many items you have to scan and how much you value full control, you may prefer to have most of your scans done by one of the better of the mail-in services.. Or combine having a service scan the bulk and also get the scanner for those times when you want more control or need to try the scan several times. There are no scanners in the consumer price range capable of moderate to high volume scanning, as they have been pushed out by the service bureaus. So in short: I remain convinced that it's the best personal slide/negative scanner still available, and the results are excellent, but it's only suitable for low volume scanning or when the items being scanned are worth investing a good bit of time.

Use to scan old print film and slides

I use this scanner to archieve old family negatives and slides. I have a relatively fast computer (i7, 8gb) so I have not noticed any problems with speed. Mind you if you want good quality scans, they can take a while, but not long. I usually have quite a bit of processing going on while I scan (dust/scratch removal, etc.) It is not as fast as a flatbed paper scanner, but it is working harder. Great investment. It may take time, but I have control over the process and get better results than commercial scanners at stores.

Good deal!

Everything others said, the case is a real plus. One thing though I still can't figure out is why are all the pics so grainy with the scans. Versus my Canoscan 8800f, which also uses silverfast.

Seems to do its job well

So far it seems to do a good job. I am still trying to learn all of the ins and outs of the software. Good value for the price.

Nice Film Scanner, Good Price

Compared to other, less expensive slide scanners I've tried, the results from the 7600i SE are far, far better. It seems to make the many dust spots that I always got with other slide scanners magically disappear. I'd rank it as "serious amateur" or "semi-pro" quality and worth the extra dollars. The software is a bit involved, but it's bound to be, given the scanner's capabilities. The front panel controls feel a bit cheap, but they work fine. I wish I'd spent the extra $$ on this unit first rather than wasting it on lesser scanners.

I Love It!

As stated by everyone, the software has a real learning curve, but with practice and patience the results are superb. The only flaw that I've found is that the IR scratch and dust removal system is not compatible with a lot of black & white films. Apparently, the silver in the emulsion reflects the IR and causes a really weird fractal or mosaic pattern in the scan. The solution is simple just turn the IR system off. I've scanned in a couple of hundred negatives and the more I use it the more I like it. I have ordered a second film carrier so I can be loading one while the other is scanning. The most important thing is to read the instructions and follow them to the letter.

It works well

The scanner works well for scanning slides and negatives. Construction seems solid and I had no problems setting it up. The software is the real star. It's amazing and removing dust and scratches. It does well in adjusting the color of old slides. My only real complaint is that it's completely manual and you have to move the slide holder for the next image. It would be great if it fed automatically. A second slide holder would be good to move the process along faster.

Good for the price

Had to reload software as for some unexplained reason scanner just quit working. All I would get on the preview scan was a black grainey image. Working OK now.
