lens is a bit loud

Nikon says that this camera has a voice coil AF motor (VCM) that keeps camera pan-in and pan-out activity silent, however that does not seem to be true. the sound that the lens makes during zoom-in and zoom-out operations can be heard. the sound is not that annoying unless you are shooting videos. when i tested out the zoom lens for movie making, the sound that the lens makes during the zoom-in and zoom-out process more than doubles in amplitude during video playback. the sound may not be noticeable while taking pictures and movies but the noise of the zoom lens just ruins the the videos that you make because of the noise. i hope that nikon makes a fix for this.

Returned, as I can only hope it was defective

I chose the Nikon 1 series cameras to provide a compact solution for those times when I either don't have the space for my full frame cameras, or so large a camera is just inappropriate. I chose this lens as it seemed to be well regarded and considered sharper than the less expensive versions of this lens. This was not my experience with the lens. I shot, along with a couple of other Nikon 1 series lenses and my compact camera, just for comparison. This lens was consistently soft and I was shooting with VR off and on a tripod. VR on yielded worse results, as clearly the VR used in this lens is a generation or three older than what Nikon is using in it's current FX lenses. Because the shots from this lens were consistently softer than those taken with the same camera, but with other Nikon 1 series lenses, I concluded this sample was problematic. I have since gone with the older version of this lens, and it is performing much better and will suffice for my intent for this camera.

Tiny But Optically Superb and Versatile Zoom Lens

The Nikon 1 10-100mm zoom lens is optically superb and elevates the Nikon 1 system to new heights. The focal length of 27 to 270mm (35mm equivalent) is very versatile and the excellent Vibration Reduction (VR) feature produces images that rival DSLR results. The photo below was taken with a Nikon 1 V1 camera body at a shutter speed of 1/125 of a second (hand held), an aperture of f/5.3, a focal length of 77.49mm (35mm equivalent), an ISO of 200, Auto White Balance, and Matrix Metering.

Wonderful lens for video and landscape

I recently bought this lens when it went on sale at Henry's Cameras. I've used it for some client videos and it is a very capable video lens, especially if you use the zoom very slowly it almost creates the feeling of a dolly shot. I've also been using this lens for landscape photography since I can easily mount my 77mm polarizing filter on it with a step-up ring. Results have been excellent.

Amazing Lens!

I personally love this lens! I can go out and not take the other nikkor 1 lenses as this lens is capable of everything they are so there is less bulk while traveling. This said it does take some getting used to, having such a huge lens (relative to the 10-30 kit lens) on such a small camera body, but once you get used to it it is amazing! the zoom is extremely smooth and practically silent, great for videos. the only issue I found was that when you are using the included petal hood and the standard flash you can get a shadow in the image as the flash is not quite tall enough to avoid the hood. but other than this small issue this is my new favourite lens for my J1!

Great for photo but not for video

This zoom len is very handy for travel. Picture qualities are good. It can take very sharp video but it suffers from exposure problem. The auto exposures cause a lot blinking in the video. I hope Nikon will come up with a firmware fix soon. Check out this sample video to see the problem:

The best 10x zoom on the market today

In my opinion, the 10-100 /4.5-5.6VR PD-Zoom lens is the best single technical achievement in Nikon 1 line of lenses and bodies. Probably it is the best 10x zoom on the market today and makes both kit lenses 10-30 and 30-110 obsolete.

Best for vidio, not as useful sigle images.

I find that this is a wonderful lens for movies. The zoom is extremely smooth and easy to operate. I think the size of it and the fact that the motorized zoom make it more difficult for single images. Because I don't do much vidio I personaly wish I had selected a different lens.

Amazing!

This lense is amazing. I am by no means an expert photographer but I can take photos that look like one took them. I hardly use the other two lenses. I highly recommend this lense. Just a tidbit I learned about from Fort Worth Camera. There is an adapter u can buy for this camera that allows u to use any Nikon lense. If u are in FW, I highly recommend this store. I bought my lense there. I could not find it where I lived. They are hard to find.

Wow, great lens for video

I have used this lens to make several videos. It works great on the V1, smooth zooming and extremely quiet. I would recommend this lens to anyone planning to use the V1 for video.

Nikon 1 10-100mm f/4.0-5.6 VR Lens for Mirrorless Camera, White Features

  • Vibration Reduction: A Nikon in-lens technology that improves image stability by automatically compensating for camera shake. Lenses that offer VR will feature the abbreviation VR on the lens barrel.
  • AS: AS stands for Aspherical lens elements. This type of lens utilizes non-spherical surfaces on either one or both sides of the glass in order to eliminate certain types of lens aberration.
  • HRI: HRI stands for High Refractive Index Lens. With a refractive index of more than 2.0, one HRI lens can offer effects equivalent to those obtained with several normal glass elements and can compensate for both field curvature and spherical aberrations.
  • ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) Glass: An optical glass developed by Nikon that is used with normal optical glass in telephoto lenses to obtain optimum correction of chromatic aberrations.
  • IF Lens: A NIKKOR lens in which only the internal lens group shifts during focusing. These lenses will be designated with the abbreviation IF on the lens barrel.
