Under the banner of professional cinematography equipment, the Laowa Proteus 85mm T2 2x Anamorphic Cine Lens for PL Mount/Canon EF, Amber, Meter stands out as a remarkable blend of classic anamorphic aesthetics and modern optical technology. This lens, part of the latest Proteus Series, is designed specifically for Super 35 sensors and boasts a constant 2X squeeze ratio, a feature that enhances the classic wide-screen anamorphic look for cinema use.
The Laowa Proteus Series is available in four distinct focal lengths, each featuring a universal T2 aperture. This ensures excellent image quality and consistent anamorphic characteristics, including the much sought-after elliptical bokeh and signature flares. With color options in blue, amber, and silver, cinematographers can choose the right flare color to set the tone for their film.
The Proteus 85mm lens supports close-up shots with a minimum focusing distance of 55cm, offering modern conveniences to meet dynamic on-set needs. This close focusing distance allows for super close-up shots, adding variety to framing and storytelling, and creating a shallower depth of field for a more aesthetic and cinematic vibe.
The lens's patented front anamorphic design ensures robust optical composition, delivering image sharpness of modern quality while retaining the vintage look of anamorphic characteristics. The constant 2X squeeze ratio works comfortably with 4:3 or 6:5 sensors, which are usually defaulted in professional cinema cameras, to deliver a 2.66:1 or 2.4:1 image after de-squeeze.
The Laowa Proteus 85mm lens features a large aperture, ranging from T2 to T22, supporting filming in all light conditions and satisfying dynamic on-set needs. The lens's optical performance is fine-tuned to deliver excellent color rendition and contrast, reproducing high image quality and sharpness even when shooting wide open. Chromatic aberration is also well-controlled, ensuring outstanding sharpness.
The Proteus lenses come with a unified gear position for quick switching between focal lengths, a back focus adjustment mechanism for direct calibration on the camera, and a 0.8 Mod Gear for both aperture and focus gear to work with the pitching. The lenses also feature a 300-degree focus throw for a finer and more accurate change in focal distance, and a 114mm outer diameter & 105mm filter thread to accommodate common matte boxes or filters.
With a Super 35+ sensor coverage and the ability to cover up to a 21.6mm sensor height, the Laowa Proteus 85mm lens is compatible with some full-frame cameras and most Super 35 cameras, including the latest Alexa 35. This lens is a testament to Laowa's commitment to blending classic anamorphic characters with remarkable image quality, supporting any kind of cinematic production.
