It’s official: Canon just announced the development of the Canon EOS R3 full-frame mirrorless camera. It promises high power, speed, sensitivity, and reliability, and will expand the EOS R series of cameras even further. Now, professional photographers will have the perfect camera for sports, wildlife, and more.
Canon EOS R3: What We Know So Far (Updated 6/2/21):
On top of enhanced AF tracking and performance, the EOS R3 will introduce a new form of object tracking for cars and motorbikes. The tracking for motorsports works in light settings as low as -7 EV.
In terms of video, the Canon EOS R3 can record in oversampled 4K, Canon Log3, and RAW footage internally. The R3’s AF functionality for people, animals, and motorsports can also be used when shooting in the above formats.
As mentioned in in the initial announcement, the EOS R3 has exceptional low-light shooting abilities. Autofocus can be used in settings of EV -7 or lower, and provides eight stops of IS control when using RF lenses with Optical Image Stabilization.
Thanks to the new sensor design and read-out speeds, the Canon EOS R3 will be able to capture continuous shooting up to 30fps in RAW quality. All AF modes are usable for 30fps continuous shooting. For reference, the R3’s durability and weather-resistance is on par with that of Canon’s 1D X Mark III.
Canon EOS R3: Original Announcement (4/21/21):
Canon said in an official press statement released today that the new Canon EOS R3 full-frame mirrorless camera will feature a newly developed 35mm full-frame construction, back-illuminated buttons, a stacked CMOS sensor, DIGIC X image processor, and more.
The company plans to position the new EOS R3 squarely alongside the likes of the EOS-1D X Mark III flagship camera (released in February 2020) and the widely-acclaimed EOS R5 full-frame mirrorless camera (released in July 2020).
From what we know about the features and specs, it definitely belongs alongside these two incredible Canon cameras.
As stated by Canon, “The currently-in-development EOS R3 is based on the concept of high speed, high sensitivity and high reliability. The EOS R3 aims to provide professional-level quality for both stills and video capture, even for moving subjects.”
