Sigma announced the Sigma fp full-frame mirrorless camera to much fanfare earlier this summer, and the truly pocket-sized unit was met with much excitement by both stills and video shooters alike. Though the company released the specifications of the camera earlier, they showcased the unit at the 2019 International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) in Amsterdam, complete with a cinema-ready unit.

The hybrid camera boasts features for photographers and filmmakers alike. It includes a back-illuminated 35mm full-frame 24.6-megapixel Bayer sensor for high-resolution capture. On the cinema front, the Sigma fp continues to impress. The camera includes, most notably, external recording in 12-bit CinemaDNG RAW format up to 4K UHD/24fps, and supports All-I (All-Intra) recording.
The Sigma fp also was designed for practicality, with a large-size heat sink that sits between the LCD and camera body to prevent overheating and to properly dissipate heat. All of this lives in an aluminum body that is both lightweight (at just 370 grams without the battery and card, and 422 grams altogether).
Since Sigma is part of the L-mount alliance, the Sigma fp is also compatible with the wide range of Leica, Panasonic, and, of course, Sigma lenses.
The camera has also opted for a full-time electronic shutter (as opposed to a mechanical shutter) to keep shake to an absolute minimum, especially in video mode.
The camera also includes a new color mode — Sigma has called it “Teal and Orange” — inspired by Hollywood films, and produces high contrast between the oranges and teals in any scene.
Sigma has also brought on the fill light function from Sigma Photo Pro software to help adjust image brightness, and an added Tone Control menu, as well as Tone and Color functions help to fine-tune the tone curve and adjust colors directly in stills or video.
Added features include HDR, cinemagraph (a cinema-style GIF), face and eye detection auto focus, as well as focus peaking.
When it comes to cinema, it also includes a director’s viewfinder function that stimulates different angles of view, and supports the Arri Alexa LF and the Red Monstro 8K, as well as others.
The user interface has been optimized to alternate between photo and film mode, and using a USB-C, can transfer the RAW video feeds.
