Today, Sony revealed an astonishing new addition to its beloved Alpha lineup: the Sony Alpha 1. This powerhouse of a camera delivers an unbelievable array of features, including a 50-megapixel resolution with the world-first speed of 30 frames per second—and that hardly scratches the surface of what to expect with this camera. Here’s a first look at the Sony Alpha 1, which is available for preorder now.

Sony Alpha 1 | Hands On Overview

Sony Alpha 1 for Photography: 50MP Resolution and 30FPS Shooting

The powerful, 50-megapixel Sony Alpha 1 boasts 15 stops of dynamic range and impeccable autofocus and auto-exposure at up to 120x per second. And the autofocus perks don’t stop there. The Alpha 1’s autofocus with 759 AF points tracks subjects with sharp accuracy—even when those subjects move quickly and unpredictably across the scene, which is great for sports, wildlife, and nearly all action scenarios. And, listen up birders: Real-time eye autofocus—praised for its accuracy in humans and animals—is now available for birds.

The Sony Alpha 1 is also capable of blackout-free shooting, which means photographers will have no black-out moments while continuously photographing through the viewfinder. And, speaking of the viewfinder, the Alpha 1 viewfinder has an exceptional 9.44 million dots, and features the highest-resolution OLED in its class.

Sony Alpha 1 for Videography: 8K Shooting at 30p

Videographers will relish the 8K 30p shooting, a first for the Alpha series. Oversampling with 8.6K allows creators to capture images with an unprecedented level of depth. 4K at 120p promises gorgeous slow-motion footage as well.

This can be used with the camera’s real-time eye autofocus, even at 8K. It also supports S-Cinetone, which delivers cinematic expression. Adding to that, 10bit S-Log 3 offers 15 stops of dynamic range. Creative Look can be used for videos and stills, and a 5.5-step, 5-axis in-body stabilization means handheld mobile shooting will also be better and smoother than ever.
