The Lumix S Series lineup continues to grow with the latest gear announcement from Panasonic. The company has just announced two new lenses — the Panasonic LUMIX S Pro 70-200mm f/2.8 telephoto lens, and the Panasonic LUMIX S Pro 16-35mm f/4 wide zoom lens — as well as firmware updates for the LUMIX S1R, S1, GH5, GH5S, and the G9.
Here’s everything you need to know:
Panasonic LUMIX S Pro 70-200mm f/2.8 Telephoto Lens ():
Key Features:
- 70-200mm f/2.8 full-frame L-mount telephoto zoom lens
- Optical image stabilization — complies with Body IS and 5-Axis Dual IS 2
- 22 lens elements in 17 groups; 2 ultra-low dispersion, 3 extra-low dispersion
- Double focus system for maximum 480fps focus control
- Dust-, splash-, freeze-resistant
The new Lumix S Pro 70-200mm f/2.8 is built for outdoor and field photographers ready to capture fast-moving action shots. But even more impressive works are possible — with the use of a Lumix teleconverter, photographers can reach even greater lengths, up to 400mm super telephoto, while still retaining 480fps focus control for fast and precise autofocus.
The full-frame L-mount lens features corrected astigmatism, and includes an Optical Image Stabilizer (OIS) that is compliant with the Lumix camera body IS and 5-Axis Dual IS 2. All of this combines to give the camera a 7-stop slower shutter speed. Added AF/MF switching and focusing is also possible via the focus clutch mechanism.
The Panasonic Lumix S Pro 70-200mm f/2.8 is available for preorder for at Adorama.
Panasonic LUMIX S Pro 16-35mm f/4 Wide Zoom Lens ():
Key Features:
- 16-36mm f/4 full-frame L-mount wide zoom lens

For portrait, outdoor, and nature shooting — including for video — Panasonic has just released the new Lumix S Pro 16-35mm f/4 wide zoom lens. The compact and lightweight lens is created with photo and video in mind, and can reach up to a maximum 480fps high-speed sensor drive, all with fast and precise autofocus.
The AF/MF switching is available through the focus clutch mechanism, and features additional interior mechanisms that suppress focus breathing when in video mode.
The Panasonic Lumix S Pro 16-35mm f/4 is available for preorder for at Adorama.
Lumix S & G Series Firmware Updates:
The announcements from Panasonic don’t end there. The company will also be releasing firmware updates for its Lumix full-frame mirrorless cameras, including the S1R, and S1, and the Micro Four-Thirds mirrorless cameras including the GH5, GH5S, and the G9, all available on November 19, 2019.
Lumix S1R & S1 Firmware:
The firmware updates for the S1R and S1 (both versions 1.3) will include expanded media compatibility, now accepting CFexpress Type B card usage. Users will also have improved compatibility when working with Profoto wireless transmitters — and most notably the Air Remote TTL-O/P and the Profoto Connect-O/P — thereby growing your lighting arsenal.
The cameras will also receive better compatibility with Sigma L-mount interchangeable lenses and mount converter, and photographers will be able to assign functions to the lens’ Fn buttons, and the Body IS performance will also see a boost. The same Fn assignments that will be available on Sigma lenses will also be upgraded for usage with the Panasonic Lumix S Pro 70-200mm f/2.8 OIS.
Overall, version 1.3 will bring improved AF performance to the S1R and S1, and AFC mode will now also have the option of AF/MF. High-speed video will also be boosted and you’ll be able to manually set the exposure.
Other improvements include the ability to select the card slot to save images to, Fn buttons can check aperture or be used to disable physical operation, and much more.
Lumix GH5, GH5S, and G9 Firmware:
When it comes to the G series, Panasonic is releasing firmware updates for the GH5 (version 2.6), GH5S (version 1.4), and G9 (version 2.0), that will work to boost major features.
Like the S series upgrade, the G series will also receive expanded compatibility with Profoto wireless transmitters. The GH5 and G9 will see improved AF including animal detection and switching between subjects by using the joystick press.
All three cameras also have new added AF-ON: Near Shift and AF-ON: Far Shift functions, focus peaking is included in MF, and continuous AF can be set in Creative Video mode on the live view screen.
The G9 has additional video functions, including new 4K 30p/25p 4:2:2 10-bit internal recording, and 4K 60p/50p 4:2:2 10-bit HDMI output. The camera will also get Luminance level for 10-bit video, Variable Frame Rate (VFR) shooting, HDR video recording, and V-Log L recording, plus Waveform Monitor.
