With high resolution and impressive bokeh, the new 135mm F1.8 full-frame prime lens from Sony is a portrait photographer’s dream. Announced today, the large-aperture G Master Prime lens also features quick autofocus acquisition, all in a portable and lightweight size that’s ideal to transport on any portrait, wedding, or sports photography job.
“Sony’s commitment to growing our lens lineup remains stronger than ever,” said Neal Manowitz, vice president of imaging solutions at Sony Electronics, in a press release. “Our 31st native full-frame FE lens and 49th overall E-mount lens, the highly anticipated 135mm prime brings the acclaimed G Master quality to another popular focal length for both professionals and enthusiasts to enjoy. We will continue to drive market-leading innovation in all aspects of our imaging business, giving our customers the opportunity to capture and create like they never have before.”
The common telephoto lens aberrations are no longer, thanks to the new optical design that front-loads the XA (extreme aspherical) and Super ED (Extra-low Dispersion) elements. The elements also work together to compensate for chromatic aberration, and to keep color fringing to a minimum. The boosted image quality and impressive bokeh are a natural result, all designed to be paired with the full-frame A9 and A7-series cameras.
The lens is coated with Sony’s own Nano AR Coating that keeps flare and ghosting down, while the dual-autofocus groups are newly arranged to allow for a minimum focus distance of just 0.7 meters, and a maximum magnification of 0.25 times.
Four XD linear motors allow for even quicker AF tracking for any fast-moving subject you may be capturing, and a control algorithm gives low-vibration AF at a maximum control response.
Built-in aperture and focus rings give you added customizable controls, and a focus range limiter switch, two focus hold buttons, and a focus-mode switch let you choose between auto and manual focus at a moment’s notice.
The new 135mm F1.8 G Master Prime Lens will be available for preorder starting Thursday, February 28, 2019 at 10AM for from Adorama.

To complement the new lens, Sony has also announced seven new circular polarizing filters in 49mm, 55mm, 62mm, 67mm, 72mm, 77mm, and 82mm diameter sizes. The new filters are meant to pair ideally with the G Master series lens and are about twice as effective as the existing filters from Sony.
Meet the new Wireless Remote Commander:
In addition to the lens and the filters, Sony has also unveiled a new Wireless Remote Commander that lets photographer control their camera (via Bluetooth) while shooting landscapes, astrophotography, architecture, or group portraits.
No wires, cables, or receivers are necessary for setup or use, and the fast-response commander takes only 0.05 seconds to release the time-lag. It’s moisture- and dust-resistant, and can handle operating temperatures between 14 ℉ and 122 ℉. Focus buttons give you manual control over use, and a C1 custom button can be programmed to your individual needs. Start and stop functions power the zoom, and a “Bulb” exposure mode is also controllable via the main button.
