I ordered this monitor for the ability to record raw from my FX9. The monitor is great, but it is not preloaded with the ability to record raw. Unfortunately the atomos website will not let me register the product with the number on the monitor. Still waiting for atomos to reply. This is very frustrating, but once I can record raw it should be a great monitor that works for what I am needing.

So far, so good. Looks good, and records in several formats. Have not tried the switching yet. I purchased it so I could record one signal, while watching another. Hopefully the switching will allow that. The big issue so far, is that in order to update the firmware, you have to also purchase the docking station. You put your SSD in the dock, connect that to the computer, download the update, then put the SSD back on the monitor, and it updates. If you planned on just using an output to feed in to an editing source, you are then buying an additional piece of gear you did not plan on. If you planned on downloading the footage to your computer to edit, then you need the dock anyway.

I love the ease of being so portable and able to switch and record multicam with ease with just sdi cables. Best use ac power or bigger batteries for longer production as it goes through them quickly. Gets hot but not excessively to touch.

The firmware update shown at IBC boosts the screen output to 3000 nits, making this thing capable of legit HDR and daylight use. The killer feature here is the ability to record raw (real, ProRes Raw) from Sony and other cameras for way less than their proprietary recorders. And then the S1H and Z6 and Z7. Recording on standard SSDs is another win, but why the caddies? Yes, they're free, but come on Atomos: NEVER NEVER put drives in caddies. These are solid-state devices with no moving parts. I don't use the four-way switching feature, but if you need to record four HD streams simultaneously... um I guess you will. This thing will consume batteries and gets warm. Also, parts of the UI could use some work... but it's better than most camera UIs.

Made my reservation once I heard they were starting to ship and got it a week later. Thx Adorama! I have used the Shogun Inferno and the Odyssey 7Q+ with the Sony Fs7, Canon C300mkII and Lumix Gh5s. Atomos makes a great monitor and edges out the Odyssey with the HDR feature. Ultimately I chose the Atomos 7 for the HDR and the multicam feature. *As of 7/23/2019 the multicam feature is available in a future firmware update. I bought the Shogun 7 for my personal Sony Fs700 (4k Raw, yeah!) but also for the abundance of other cameras I tend to encounter. So far, I'm a little concerned how quickly this monitor heats up with one battery (which last about 45 minutes). Might update this post once the new firmware is released.

AtomOS has released its 10.4 firmware update as a free download. A new switching update from Atomos for their Shogun 7 HDR monitor-recorder-switcher reinforces the company’s mission to make professional, multi-camera filmmaking more widely available to mainstream video content creators.
The affordable price point of the Shogun 7 means that whether you have an indie budget, or the backing of a much bigger production, filmmakers now have the access to an easy to use, portable, all-in-one device for monitoring, recording and switching.
The streams are all recorded to the same high performance SSD drive and can be ready to edit moments after the shoot has finished. Each is recorded as a separate ISO in either Apple ProRes or Avid DNx, providing post production with creative advantages and the convenience of having multiple, synchronised camera angles when they come to craft the story in the edit suite.
All input switches are recorded in metadata with a choice of transition type. Once you’ve finished capturing your streams, simply import the resulting Apple Final Cut XML file along with your ISOs into your NLE and the timeline automatically populates with all the transitions in place.
Audio is also taken care of: every ISO can record the 2-channel embedded digital audio from each source, as well as analog stereo channels coming into the Shogun 7 (via optional XLR breakout cable). The program stream always records the analog feed and can switch between audio inputs for the on-camera audio to match the switched feed.
On-screen, it is possible to choose to view the four input streams at once in a quad-view, or a full-screen view of any one of the four input streams. In full-screen you can access tools like waveforms, magnify or engage peaking check focus for each angle and make any adjustments to get the perfect HDR or SDR shots.
The Atomos Shogun 7 7-inch HDR Pro cinema monitor/recorder/switcher is a versatile recording and production station that gives justice to today’s cutting-edge cameras. It lets camera operators and cinematographers monitor and stream their content at nearly true-to-life dynamic range and superb resolution. It boasts the AtomHDR engine, a system designed by Atomos that yields a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, which displays vivid and richer blacks and colors to an LCD/LED hybrid display. More than that, the device also rewards users with several useful functions during the shoot right down to the finished product. It not only offers up to HDp60 SDI ISOs x 4 recording directly to your desired format, but it also lets you switch between 4 live HD SDI video streams and 1 program stream for maximum flexibility. With it, you can monitor, analyze, and tag shots on the fly, saving you precious post-production time. Broadcast and multi-camera film sets will benefit from the Dolby Vision output, which gives a real-time glimpse of how the content will appear in people’s home screens from any SDI or HDMI HDR camera. The stand-alone monitor/recorder/switcher is extremely portable and seamlessly integrates with any format and camera, making it a must-have accessory for your mobile workstation.
Monitor, record and switch between 4 live HD SDI video streams (and one program stream) for flexible in-the-field directing. Enjoy the freedom of asynchronous switching and gen lock in & out to connect to existing infrastructure. Shogun 7 offers up to HDp60 SDI ISOs x 4 recording.
With the latest HDMI 2.0v you can capture up to 4Kp60 on any available camera, or via Quad Link, Dual Link or Single Link. If slow motion capture is important to your production, Shogun 7 lets you capture 2K up to 240p.
To make the most advanced on-set production tool for creative enhancement, to achieve this we developed the most advanced screen technology today, and it took us three years. We developed “Dynamic AtomHDR” screen technology into Shogun 7’s field monitor makes your images blacks blacker and whites brighter. We include real-time output to Dolby Vision capable displays so that you can quickly check that your Creative intent will translate perfectly to audiences at home. We added live asynchronous switching to record up to four real-time cameras at the same time.
Atomos Shogun 7 is a precision HDR monitor-recorder-switcher designed for the film and video professional. It can be used as either a stand-alone field monitor, recorder and switcher for event, documentary and live in-the-field storytelling; or as a tool for large-scale on-set episodic TV, film and cinema productions where multiple crew members such as focus pullers, grips and cinematographers require a consistent visual reference across the field monitor ecosystem. Shogun 7’s portable size lets you monitor, analyze and tag while on set; and check how your content will look in your audience’s home via real-time Dolby Vision output. With Shogun 7 you’re not locked into any format, camera manufacturer or pipeline. It is a completely flexible master recording and production station.
