Questions & Answers

Shopper : Which pro video camera (like the Canon XF-300) has a time lapse feature?Svilen s : unfortunately I'm not exactly sure because I'm not familiar with the other models
Patrick O : What is the optimal shutter speed and frame rate for progressive?KARA L : If shooting for news gathering or TV transmission, then 30p progressive frame rate. See Canon Digital Learning Center for XF300/350 for other progressive shooting modes.JUNE J : It would depend on what your shooting. Time of day. Inside or out. And the lighting characteristics. I shoot at 1/60 and in full manual. But that can change depending on where Im at and what Im doing. Its a good starting point though. I shot a gig at a local event where full Auto may have been the best choice do to the lack of good lighting. I hope that may help in some way. Cheers. RJMICHAEL L : Your shutter speed should be double your frame rate so if you are shooting at 60 I, you would have a shutter speed of 120 if you are shooting 30 P you would have a shutter speed of 60 24P would give you a shutter speed of 48. For the best film look he would want to shoot at 24th key. 30 P will work for computer or online use by 24p is the closest to A film look.DAN H : The easiest thing to do is set the shutter speed to "angle" so that you set it in degrees. By setting the shutter to 180 degrees the camera will always set the shutter speed to twice the frame rate, which is optimal. So 30 frames per second will have a 1/60th of a second frame rate. 24 frames per second will have a 1/48th, etc. there is not one optimal frame rate for progressive. 24 and 30 yield different artistic results. But the shutter speed should be twice the frame rate either way.ANDREW N : That all depends on what you choose for look and what kind of chased light you're catching. I shoot primarily 23.976 fps and so, all things being equal, shoot at 1/48th (or 180°). The variables are myriad, depending upon conditions and desired result.
Shopper : Is the video quality on this camera far superior to video from a NIKON D800 or Canon 5d mark iii. Similar or just slightly superior?ROSS D : My Canon XF 300 Pro Camcorder shoots excellent quality HD video and has a very good audio system. I do have a 5D MII but not the new 5DMIII. I feel the HD video on the 300 is as good as the 5DMII. The major differences is that the 300 has 3 1/3 sensors making it more difficult to obtain a shollow depth of field. I have a professional video business primarily targeting corporate type video productions so the shollow depth of field issue is not as important. However, I am presenting working on a feature film project and that I plan to shoot with DSLRs or a digital cinema camera. In summary, you will not be disappointed with HD video from 300.Svilen s : Canon xf300 is better than d800 & 5d if u need video get xf300Samir P : Thanks guys. That does help. Just one more question. I am a real estate broker, but was a media professional, video editor/shooter in the past. Currently I would primarily be using the camera for shooting high-end video tours indoors and also outside pans of buildings. I currently own a NIKON D90 which has a 720p 24fps video mode which I have used to post youtube clips but upon editing I have seen some nasty artifacts but I suspect it is from the motion jpeg codec. The D800 I have been considering states it is a 24mbps h.264 codec and this xf300 does 4:2:2 mpeg 2 codec. What do you think would be a better camera for indoor video tours of homes/condos? I guess I just liked the idea that its easier to be walking into real estate appointments with a dslr all the time instead of a full blown video camera.DOMINIC H : The video from this camera is different from that of a DSLR camera. It has a superior codec for editing and color grading but it lacks the depth of field of a DSLR. Personally, I own both a 5D Mark ii and the XF300 and I use them for different things. The XF300 for all around run and gun shooting and doc filmmaking, and the 5D for ads and web spots where the conditions are more controlled. It all depends on what you're trying to accomplish. They both have their strengths and weaknesses but the XF300 is a truly professional camera with full audio inputs, monitor, ND filters and an array of professional features that some people find necessary. But the 5D still looks great too but can be limiting in certain situations. And you'll need to spend lots of money to buy lenses for the 5D (and D800) while the stock XF300 lens is very versatile. Hope this helps.GREGORY S : I have this camera and a Mark ii (NOT the mark iii). IMHO: The XF300 is significantly better for video than the mark ii. The mark ii has problems with sharpness due to interpolation down to 1080 video. I've also seen some big problems with reproduction of certain colors. Overall the 300xf video is richer and sharper. Not to mention being so much easier to use for video shooting. The mark ii is better at shallow depth of field effects. And very wide angle shots. that's about all it's better at.

Canon always puts out a great product. The XF-300 is no exception.

The Canon XF300 Professional Camcorder features 50Mbps MPEG-2 4:2:2 recording to universally available Compact Flash (CF) Cards for unsurpassed image quality and efficient, robust workflow at an affordable price. It is ideally suited to match the requirements of electronic newsgathering (ENG) crews, independent filmmakers, documentary producers, event videographers and military agencies.

Utilizing file-based MPEG-2 compression with an MXF File Wrapper ensures the widest compatibility with existing industry infrastructure, metadata and non-linear editing (NLE) systems. A newly developed Genuine Canon 18x HD L-Series Lens along with three Canon native 1920 x 1080 CMOS Image Sensors delivers pristine image quality.

The XF300 also offers multiple recording bit rates, resolutions and variable frame rates to expand your creative flexibility and allow you to work in virtually any production environment. And complete customization over the image, display and operation makes the XF300 a camcorder that can be tailored to fit your individual needs.
