Pointer unable to be aligned with illuminator

I was very excited to purchase this Class 1 laser because of the outstanding performance of the LED based Illuminator. However, once I received this device I noticed that the IR pointer was off on the right edge of the illuminator spill and no apparent way to adjust the illuminator so that the pointer would be centered, like every other IR laser/illuminator on the market. Customer support informed me that the DBAL-D2 is not designed to have the illuminator and IR pointer co-aligned and that I was trying to force it to do something it's not intended to do. The product description should state that it is impossible for the IR pointer to be centered inside the illuminator spill.

Best Civilian IR Device and Laser

I've had the pleasure of spending time using my DBAL D2 over the past few weeks. The pointer, laser, and illuminator are all as good as a MAWL for less than half the price. This unit has better performance than any other civilian unit on the market, with basically military grade illumination, plus it's eye safe unlike some of the military issued devices. Quite honestly, it's bulky, but if you use a weaker device you need a large illuminator anyways. It all balances nicely and it's one unit vs IR light plus a different aiming unit. By the way, you can add a rail scale sight to the top and you don't need a front sight taking up valuable rail space. Lastly, this thing is ROCK solid and doesn't lose zero if you take it off and reattach it due to the attachment system.

Almost perfect!

Overall nice package. On my unit, the adjusters did not "click" as if they had too much lube inside. It does adjust, it's just a little harder to count clicks. Otherwise, performance of IR and green is good. The illuminator on high is effective if there is no other light interference. Shape is good, range okay.

Love it

I?m so impressed with the performance of this. Yeah it?s a little big but still completely usable and about 1/2 the price of mawl. Highly recommend

Very happy with the A3.

Performs great, the quality is top notch, and i have always preferred the looks of the DBAL vs other aiming devices. Im glad I went with the A3 so I could have access to all the features. It feels super solid.

Stopped working 2 months after purchase UNUSED

My Dbal stopped working after 2 months of sitting in a safe on a rifle that was never fired. Replaced the batteries, ran through the troubleshooting steps.... completely dead. Fortunately I am a civilian, but this could be life threatening for a service member in the field. People pay the extra money for gear that works. Sadly this failed to meet that standard.

DBAL A3

Received the unit about a month ago and could not be more impressed. Even with the civilian market limitations, this laser out performed competitors that are owned by my friends. The IR illuminator, while not the best (D2, still performs exceptionally well to 100-150yards. The laser, both IR and visible make hitting targets under night vision a breeze. The mount is a QD mount and also held zero under hard use. No complaints whatsoever.

Good overall for its price range

Good overall product for its price range; however, it does have a couple of issues . The focus for the IR illuminator is very difficult to turn and care must be taken not to damage the rubber lens cover while adjusting . I’ve noticed there seems to be a different variant of the DBAL-A3 that has a longer IR Illuminator exit port that may be easier to adjust . I’m not sure if mine is a older or later model . The other issue is when using the unit mounted fire button , one out of maybe 30 attempts will result in the unit firing but immediately turning off and requiring a second push and hold of the fire button. I may contact Steiner about this particular issue.

AS close as you can get!

Preliminary inspection checked out and all appears to work correctly. Did an initial 10 meter zero and adjustments are good. Green on high is BRIGHT! So much so that it can be easily seen at 60yds. in the sunlight against a white background. Expect to do live fire zero this week if I can get some time. First impression is exceptional quality and craftsmanship. I wish it was a little lighter but it's built like a tank for a reason so I'd rather have reliability and consistency over light weight. This might be the best civilian laser product on the market. I own several different lasers and have experience with restricted IR units and unless you are a forward observer calling in air strikes, the DBAL-D2 is the one to get!

Great and sturdy product

Got it few weeks ago and I’m impressed with all the features, ease of control and quality of build. I read some concerns about the mount, but I couldn’t identify single issue. It holds strongly on my top rail.

Leaves some to be desired

Purchased after a lot of research and am pretty happy with the unit itself. However, the first issue was that the protective cover for the visible and IR lasers broke before I even got to shoot it; I had only flipped it to the side about 10 times between observing the laser in different environments and finally doing a basic zero at 50 yards prior to shooting paper for zero over the course of 2 weeks. Customer service was happy to tell me the proper part number (which I already knew) so that I COULD PURCHASE IT. When I spend over $1k, I expect they would send me a 50-cent replacement or two for free, and not charge $10 each—big thumbs down on service. The illuminator itself really isn't that good so add a standalone one to your budget. Ultimately, however, it feels well-made and the visible green laser was noticeable even in daylight out to about 20 yards.

Only one small issue with every DBAL I’ve used...

Durable, reliable, and with great features like a visible coaligned green laser for easy zeroing and an adjustable IR illuminator. Only issue I have with every DBAL I’ve used is the port for the remote plug. PLEASE make this port a hair smaller in diameter so the Crane style remote plug (TAPS or SureFire) doesn’t rattle loose after firing a magazine. Even better would be designing the port with threads and the remote plugs like a coax cable that screws onto the back of the DBAL. I feel so “cheap” having this >$1000 device on my rifle with the plug taped up so it doesn’t come loose. I was not impressed with my ATPIAL-C, but at least I don’t lose my laser under night vision because the plug fell out.

The product didn’t work as advertised after a few

I was very excited to purchase my dbal a3 to use with my nods. Unfortunately after a few hours of playing with it the green vis laser would no longer work. Sometimes it would come on with the vis override pressure bad but the laser would quickly dim. All the IR stuff works great except for a few flower blooms in the IR illuminator. I have spoke with customer service and it’s being returned but it was pretty aggravating start to my new purchase. I habe no doubt it will be replaced and will work as advertised

State of the art technology

I received my DBAL-D2 yesterday and thoroughly read through the user manual (I’m like that; military aviator background) and finally had a chance to play around with it last night. It was very dark and I don’t have big city lights around to interfere with my night vision toys. IR laser is very viewable and bright under PVS14 and the IR illuminator is great. Whenfocused you get a nice circle of bright light and when “unfocused” a huge area of flood light. I could actually light up my whole backyard in flood. Glad I decided to go with this model.

Excellent

I bought this D2 about a year ago, mainly based on its large illuminator. Absolutely lights up the area with a great controllable beam pattern.Lasers are both nice and bright along with easy zeroing. Main control switch is smooth with a nice felt feedback as you dial through the modes.. If your looking to own the night, this is the one! I now wish I would of ordered the black one, I wonder if Steiner offers any kind of service of repainting for their units?

Dbal A3 on a Sig MPX

I have been using a my new Dbal A3 on a Sig MPX (9mm) for a little over a month now. So far I have fire about 1400 rounds through the weapon with the laser mounted on it and have no had any issues with the laser coming loose, losing its zero or having connectivity issues with the battery (I have read some reviews stating a few people have had battery connectivity issues). Again, I am using this on a 9mm platform so I don't know about things shifting on a larger caliber weapon. The visible laser is excellent and outperforms my mil spec Peq15 by a long shot. I have been able to use the visible laser easily out to 30 yards in the middle of the day. The laser (for me is visible out to about 50 yards during bright daylight although, using a laser outside past a few yards isn't really practical (my opinion). Inside the visible laser on its low and high setting works great. I have not had any issues with the laser flickering on and off, or the zero wandering. The IR setting are fantastic on this device. I have shot with his device twice now at night using NVGs and Im very impressed with it. The IR laser on low works very well from distances out to 50-100 yards. The IR laser on high is very bright and for me, worked easily shooting to 200 yards and I can see it out to 300 plus yards (I haven't shot being 200 yards with it just because Im using a 9mm platform. The IR light/flood is also great and I like it more than my Peq15 as its adjustable so OI can either make it very intense in a small focussed area or I can expand the focus and get a good large area with it. I have no problem using the IR light/flood out to 50 to 150 yards and have been able to pick targets up that were set up in dark shadows with little ambient light hitting them. The controls were a bit more complicated then a peq15 and are not as easy to use but once you do some training with it and get used to it they are not Everly complicated by any means. The pressure pad seems to work well and I have not had any issues with it yet, although pressure pads are generally a failure point for these kinds of devices. I have not had issues with it coming disconnected from he device and the wire appears to be failure robust and doesn't look like it will break near the connection points with out some extensive use. I found zeroing the laser to be easy. I don't really have much else to say on that topic. The laser are slaved so you can just zero the vis or the IR and it will work for the two of them. The laser is lightweight and I haven't noticed it really adding any extra weight to the gun. I am running this device behind a magpul MBUS front sight and I don't have issues with the vis/IR laser or the IR flood hitting the site or causing any splash with Vis or IR. The only negative thing I have to say about this device is that I have had issues with it not working at temps of about 5 to 0 degrees (I live in a cold mountain town). I have only experienced this 1 time and am not sure if it was a 1 time deal for the failure at this temp or not.

Dbal-d2 lights up the night

I've had this unit now a few days and so far I've been really impressed. The ir illuminator is where this unit shines. It's really bright and the adjustability of the light beam is the icing on the cake. The ir laser is more than adequate for my desired usage and highly visible.

DBAL A-3 REVIEW

I just purchased this device. The laser pointer is nice and bright in the green, vs the red in daylight hours. I haven't had a chance to evaluate the I.R. pointer and illuminator. This looks rock solid and the mount locks on the rail real tight with no play. It is not too big either. On the red dot sight, I did go with a 1/3 cowitness to optimize the field of view on my red dot.
