This Leica named product is definitely not worth the cost. The images are noisy and worthless. Save your money.

The studio is long gone, however the love of photography remains. No, it can't compete with my toyo 45AII field camera, however, it's a great little camera to stick in the pocket of my shorts and get those shots that the AII was not there for.

So happy with the Leica V lux 20...I had a bit of trouble setting up the GPS However...learned it sets up easier OUTSIDE where you can pick up a signal. The shots are incredible...Compared it to my Sony's and my Panasonic...It is hands down superior and worth the extra $. Happy I bought it.

So I have only had this camera a few days and was a little reluctant to pull the trigger for this $700 pocket camera because of some comments regarding Leica compacts like "only for those looking for the "red dot"... Panasonic is the same camera for less... but decided to go with this after being disappointed with 3 other compacts that I had tried. For reference my other camera system is a full frame Nikon (D700). Simply - I am blown away by the quality of the images from the Leica. 25-300mm effective optical zoom is beyond what I ever expected in a compact camera. Would have been nice to have a viewfinder for bright days and a flash shoe (as Leica has for other similar models) for this price. My only real beef though is why can't it shoot RAW images? Seems like that should have been a given with this camera but I can live with it. The 720p HD movie is nice as is the built in flash. This is a well built camera.

Lens: Leica DC-Vario Elmar 1:3.3 4.9 / 1 49.2 mm ASPH (25 300mm)
The lens of the LEICA V-LUX 20 enables the user to use the enormous range of 25 to 300 mm for both still and movie photography. For macro photography, extremely wide-angle views or zooming in on distant subjects this camera captures amazingly sharp images across the entire wide-angle to telephoto range.
When shooting with longer focal lenghts (telephoto) or in poor light, optical image stabilization effectively prevents blurred and shaky pictures. The camera features a 14.5 megapixel sensor. Flexbile use of the sensor format guarantees full exploitation of the entire zoom range (35 mm equivalent: 25 300 mm) in all possible image aspect ratios, no matter whether set for 4:3, 3:2 or 16:9. The maximum resolution of 12.1 megapixels is available for images shot with an aspect ratio of 4:3
Simple, Intuitive Handling
Leica cameras set the standards for the best possible handling. With the LEICA V-LUX 20, the ergonomically positioned and logically arranged control elements of the camera ensure intuitive handling of the camera even by less experienced photographers. A wide range of automated functions ensures simple, straightforward operations in any situation. At the same time, manual setting options for apertures and shutter speeds provide greater creative scope for more demanding users. The modeselection dial on the camera's top plate allows fast and simple switching between the various atuomatic modes and manual operations.
GPS Global Positioning System
The LEICA V-LUX 20 has an integrated Global Positioning System for tagging purposes. This innovative feature records the geographical coordinates of the location and the local time of every picture shot and stores the information in the EXIF data of the image files.
The GPS also provides a variety of fascinating options and benefits. For instance, when travelling, the VLUX 20 displays all the sights in the immediate neighborhood. The V-LUX 20 has access to a total of 500,000 such points of interest in 73 countries. The GPS feature is also useful when archiving pictures.
The GPS does not function in China, its neighboring regions and any place where satellite signal reception is unavailable.
Movies in HD-Quality
The LEICA V-LUX 20 has the 720 p HD movie function . Movies are recorded in MJPEG HD format and tagged with GPS data. To record a HD movie, all one needs to do is touch a button at the back of the camera. Once this button is pressed, the user can concentrate on the subject of the scene as the intelligent automatic systems of the LEICA V-LUX 20 integrates all the essential functions such as face recognition, automatic scene mode selection , and smart exposure for still and movie capture. The user can also zoom across the 12 x zoom range while shooting movies.
Adobe Photoshop Elements 8
The LEICA V-LUX 20 comes with a copy of Adobe Photoshop Elements 8.0. This software package is easy to use while providing the complete image-processing solution. It provides fast and convenient media management and intuitive post-processing of photos and movies. Other features include the practical Media Manager function and the Before and After feature to compare post production results with the original image.
