Ok

I got this camera for my 10 year old nephew. He had been using my cannon T1i until i could fine something for him. Did not want to get him a T1i because they were to much money for a youngster. But I want it to have the eye piece and not just look at the back of the camera. After receiving the camera (which took 2 days thanks so much)he started messing with it and took some good pictures. They may be a lower megapixil than I would like but it is a great start. He did not have any trouble figuring out how to use it. Have checked out the photos on the computer and I was pleased with how they looked.

Nice camera for the price.

It is a little difficult to use at first, but if you are a novice and you want a camera to learn on it will be great once you get into it. It has a lot of capabilities without as much difficulty as a true DSL. It is, however, not just a point and shoot as I found out. Still a worthwhile purchase and a chance to learn something new and exciting.

A lot to learn but probably worth it

I thought I would like the opening and closing LCD feature but I don't. It is harder to just point and shoot when you have to open the LCD so I am using the viewfinder more instead. It took a while to get use to where the buttons were located so I was always pushing the wrong button. The user guide needs to be more user friendly. Too much info disbursed throughout the book for a first time user of such an extensive featured camera. I do like all the features even though it will take me quite a while to figure them all out, but I think the camera was well worth it. Due to the wide angle lens I was able to take great pictures without being a long distance away to get the full view of the object. The zoom is great and could almost be used as binoculars.

Not so cool

I have to give this camera a rather low score,Canon as usual don`t give its customers their money`s worth. This is NOT a cheap camera, I would have expected more. No filter threads on the lens, the auto focus goes bazurk under poor lighting or bright lights. After zooming all the way to 80X with the digital zoom, it takes a while before the lens reacts and zooms out. No raw capability, very POOR battery life, I don`t think I have shot more than 100 pictures with some brand new rechargeable batteries before I have to recharge them again. And I use the viewfinder 90% of the time, that should conserve battery life. No battery meter, No BULB shooting capability, the macro zoom really sucks. The self timer function is a pain to learn how to use it, it takes like 4 or 5 different steps. It feels cheap with all that plastic. And it is a heavy bulky camera. The viewfinder is TOO BRIGHT at night, no adjustment possible, it will get your eyes tired in a jiffy. Now the good stuff, the video quality although not HD is good, so is the sound, the digital zoom is quite good, even at night, the picture quality is above average.Good to be to use regular AA batteries especially with that poor battery life. It looks good, almost like a SLUR but that is as close as it gets.

best of the Canon point and shoots

I have been shooting since a 17 yr. old kid,,22years in USMC as photog, used everything from 4x5 speedgraphic to leica. This camera will give you excellent shots, you must spend time reading the manual,it will take time to go thru 289 pages, you have to go over the instruction more than just once. Once you start shooting you will be very pleased with all this camera can do. I have tried the digital zoom at about 1160 mm,and was amazed at the results, great lens.

This is a great camera

The SX10 IS lives up to its reputation. It is a great camera for anyone from the casual photographer to someone who wants to take serious art photos. There are so many settings that you can use, and the zoom is fantastic. I am able to take one-handed photos while dog walking two 95 lb dogs. Couldn't get any easier to handle than that.

Canon PowerShot SX10 IS

In process of learning... only having the camera for less than a month. I'm old school 35mm camera. Going from a camera that weight was 2-3 pounds down to a camera that's just over a pound is a big challenge. Also having bear cub size hand and the little buttons to push when and where is another challenge, but with time I see this Canon SX10is a perfect camera for some one wanting to get into Digital Photography and not worry about lugging extra lens around. It's rated from 28mm ~ 560mm equal to a 35mm lens.It does not have a shutter remote only a timer 0--10 sec.And currently does not have threads on the lens barrel for filters. Plastic body...Over all I would rate it 4.3 stars on a 5 star scale.

Exceptional features for non SLR camera

The continuous shoot button worked brillantly for us on our spotting the dolphin cruise. Being that they are only out of the water for a split second using this function allowed us to get some great pictures. Also the focus with the zoom is great allowing you take great close up shots of fauna and foliage that really show the colours and detail.

Awesome camera

I love this camera. It replaces my s5 that I gave to my son when his daughter was born in October. I used the iso 3200 setting in near dark woods to see how it would work. Not fantastic, but good enough that if there is something you want a picture of you could have a usuable picture. I was worried about the wheel but so far it has not been a problem. It works really well for the features that I have tried thus far. I love the fact that it is just like our Canon digital slr cameras so there is not much of a learning curve. The only thing I like better about the s5 is the attached lens cap, but I simply attached one of the little cap keeper things and the elastic that fits around the lens to hold it fits perfectly. Face detection works like a charm. Great camera for anyone who wants more than a point and shoot without the expense.

Great camera with a huge zoom range

Surprisingly good camera. The zoom range is outstanding and the results are sharp and without any noticeable distortion. IS works extremely well, even with the lens extended beyond 500mm. Construction is solid and a little heavy but given the features it is to be expected. Fast focus. Excellent LCD that swivels. Having 28mm at the wide end is the main reason for selecting this camera. The only thing I do not like is the EVF--my main camera is a Canon 40d and the view through an SLR is much clearer.

Checkered Flag!

This camera goes where my SLR can’t. I happily forego RAW capability for the vari-angle LCD alone--it's really that handy Not only do I use the 28-560mm optical zoom from end to end but also the camera’s digital zoom to capture great pix with lots of color and detail. This camera has burst mode, better noise control, improved dynamic range, exposure control during movie recording, focus frame size select and an iContrast setting to ramp up the fun and score more keepers. I've read complaints about the camera's slow maximum aperture at the long end of the zoom and its tendency to overexpose. Yes, the lens is slow beyond 100mm, but overexposure actually works to an advantage for handheld shots at longer focal lengths. A quick increase in shutter speed effectively corrects exposure and in the bargain results in fewer blurry shots. My only real quibbles with the camera are ho-hum contrast in cloudy or shaded conditions and its shallow, flimsy-feeling control dial--too light a touch, and it doesn't engage, spinning uselessly; too much pressure, and suddenly the camera is in macro mode, manual focus or another ISO. The darn thing's just plain tetchy and takes some getting used to.

The Canon PowerShot SX10 IS Compact Digital Camera puts you on the cutting edge of advanced technology, with an incredibly powerful 20x Optical Zoom, 10-megapixel resolution and new DIGIC 4 Image Processor for high-performance face and motion detection. The lens is optimized to fully exploit its zoom length and wide shooting angle in concert with the camera's high 10.0-megapixel resolution.

UD glass effectively suppresses chromatic aberration, while enhanced negative refractive power ensures that distortion at the wide-angle is also corrected. Further aberration is controlled with the inclusion of a double-sided aspherical glass-molded lens and ultra-high refraction index lens. The SX10 IS is equipped with Canon's acclaimed Optical Image Stabilizer Technology that automatically detects and corrects camera shake - one of the leading causes of fuzzy or blurred shots. Even when zoomed in, you can get the steady, crisp, brilliant images you'll be proud to shoot and share. And Canon's Optical Image Stabilizer Technology is convenient to use. It functions perfectly with or without a flash.

The PowerShot SX10 IS is equipped with many of the same features as a higher-end camera: an ultra-powerful zoom, eye-popping resolution and advanced picture-improving technology. 10.0 mega pixels of resolution give your photography incomparable depth and ensure that any section of any shot can be enlarged and cropped with no loss in quality when you edit the image and even in large printout. It creates crisp, clear 13" x 19" posters. The camera's 2.5-inch LCD screen gives you the big picture, whether you're shooting, reviewing or showing off your images. This high-resolution screen offers a crisp, clear picture to make shooting, playback and using the camera's menu functions especially convenient.

Clear and bright, it also features Night Display for easy viewing in low light. It also has an electronic viewfinder that provides sharp images when you shoot close-up with Super Macro shooting mode. Canon's proprietary DIGIC Image Processors have long set its cameras apart from the competition and the new DIGIC 4 sets the bar even higher. Faster, more accurate noise reduction delivers better image quality, even at high ISO speeds. iSAPS Technology is an entirely original scene-recognition technology developed for digital cameras by Canon. Using an internal database of thousands of different photos, iSAPS works with the advanced DIGIC 4 Image Processor to improve focus speed and accuracy, as well as exposure and white balance.
