You know what they say: good things come in pairs. Canon has officially announced two exciting APS-C Sensor cameras: the EOS Canon 90D, a DSLR that is designed and built to refresh update the extremely popular 80D, as well as the EOS M6 Mark II, a crop sensor mirrorless camera, which aims to take the promising M Series to even greater heights.

In addition to these cameras, Canon has announced two high-performance, professional-level, RF Series lenses that are sure to excite and draw even more photographers to the EOS R mirrorless line-up: the RF 15-35mm f/2.8 L IS USM and RF 24-70mm f/2.8 L IS USM, which draws Canon users closer to a much anticipated “trinity” of RF series lenses.

So let’s break down each new product, shall we?

Canon EOS 90D and M6 MKII | Hands On

Canon EOS 90D

Starting with the new, highly-anticipated Canon EOS 90D — this camera replaces the popular EOS 80D, and seems poised for enthusiast photographers with a well-rounded, highly attractive feature set.

The EOS 90D is built to stand out in this category, and perform exceptionally. Built with a 32.5 Megapixel CMOS (APS-C) sensor and high-speed, continuous shooting up to 10 fps with no lag during OVF shooting, the EOS 90D can offer the quality and speed needed for most enthusiast photographers and their work.

But what really stands out are the new advancements in auto focus. The EOS 90D is built with a 45-point all cross-type AF system, the reliable Dual Pixel CMOS AF in Live View with 5,481 manually selectable AF points, and EOS iTR AF fast and accurate face detection when shooting portraits or filming subjects.

These auto focus advancements, along with a new AE Sensor that’s equipped with around 220,000 pixels, allow this camera to perform admirably for photo and video purposes. Along with the better photo performance, the new EOS 90D can shoot 4K UHD 30fps / FHD 120fps video, which is a fantastic range for those who are growing their video skillset as well.

Finally, the EOS 90D went through some internal and external changes as well, with enhanced operating controls, and built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technology that allows you to pull images wirelessly from your camera to edit on-the-go and share immediately. Built-in, of course, is the Vari-angle Touch Screen LCD, which allows users to operate the EOS 90D in difficult angles, or as a vlogging camera, with the screen flipped out and forward.

With an all updated performance, AF, and operational features, the new Canon EOS 90D is a great option for enthusiast photographers who prefer DSLRs, and want to grow with one.

The Canon EOS 90D is available for preorder at Adorama.

Canon M6 Mark II

The M Series was Canon’s first mirrorless series, before the current EOS R line, and now with the release of the impressive EOS M6 Mark II, it could make the M series even for attractive and popular for creatives, especially as a travel option, due to it’s incredible minimal size and weight.

The M6 Mark II shares several similarities with the EOS 90D, like the 32.5 Megapixel CMOS (APS-C) Sensor, and the AF system, which features Dual Pixel CMOS AF with 5,481 Manually Selectable AF Points. It also shoots video up to 4K UHD 30fps / FHD 120fps Video. However, there are several key differences and features that impress.

In addition to the Dual Pixel CMOS AF, the M6 Mark II comes with Eye Auto Focus, which again, helps with incredible portrait images or film work. The M6 Mark II is also incredibly fast as a mirrorless camera, with the ability to shoot at high-speed continuous shooting of up to 14 fps with AF/AE Tracking, but it doesn’t stop there. In RAW Burst Mode, the M6 Mark II can shoot at a blazing 30 fps, pre-shooting, which is impressive for a camera in this range.

The M6 Mark II was also designed and built with easy-to-use, intuitive features that make operating this camera easy and enjoyable. It includes a 3.0-inch Touch Panel LCD Screen with Tilt Option, new user controls developed from the EOS DSLR camera system, built in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technology, as well as Touch and Drag AF, with the optional Electronic ViewFinder, which is purchased separately.

Since the M6 Mark II does share similar performance features with the EOS 90D, it’s a camera built for photo and video enthusiasts, but in a mirrorless form factor. It’s feature-packed, minimal in size and weight, and fantastic to travel with.

The Canon EOS M6 Mark II is available for preorder now at Adorama.

Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8 IS USM

Now to the RF lenses, which are the professional grade, high-performance, next-level glass you expect from Canon.

The RF 15-35mm f/2.8 IS USM is incredibly exciting because it is the first wide-angle zoom lens of the RF and EOS R system with professional specs, and it sure looks to impress, offering highest image quality and bright flat f/2.8, which performs exceptionally in low light.

In addition, the RF 15-35mm f/2.8 offers Optical Image Stabilization of up to 5 stops of shake correction, high speed, smooth and quiet AF with Nano USM, and focuses at minimum distance of 0.92 feet/0.28 meters so it’s fast, reliable, and an excellent option for photo and video.

The RF 15-35mm f/2.8 was designed with excellent control and communication in mind. Like other RF lenses in this lineup, it features a control ring for direct setting changes, and a 12-pin communication system, which provides maximum communication between lens and camera body.

Finally, the RF 15-35mm f/2.8 was built to be durable and reliable in the field. The lens is dust and weather-resistant, with a fluorine coating on the lens surface to provide resistance against scratches. In addition, the RF 15-35mm f/2.8 also has an Air Sphere Coating (ASC) that minimizes lens flare and ghosting, so you can rest assured that this lens will perform when you need it the most.

Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8 IS USM

The RF 24-70mm f/2.8 IS USM has finally arrived, and it couldn’t be more feature-packed. The 24-70mm f/2.8 has always been one of the most versatile, popular lenses that Canon has ever made, and it was a staple of the EF line for years. To see Canon bring both the RF 24-70mm f/2.8 IS USM and RF 15-35mm f/2.8 IS USM to market this year, is a welcome sight, and a sign that the “trinity” of RF lenses will be available soon.

The RF 24-70mm f/2.8 has almost identical features as the RF 15-30mm f/2.8 above, with Optical Image Stabilization of up to 5 stops of shake correction, and high speed, smooth and quiet AF with Nano USM. However, it has an even more powerful focusing distance of 0.69 feet/0.21 meters at 24mm, and 1.25 feet/0.38 meters at 70mm.

Like the RF 15-35mm f/2.8, the RF 24-70mm f/2.8 was designed for excellent control and communication, with the customizable control ring and a 12-pin communication system. It also has the same build quality, sealed to be dust- and weather-resistant, and the front lens element is fluorine-coated for scratch resistance, along with air sphere coating that minimizes lens flare and ghosting.

Both the RF 15-35mm f/2.8 and the RF 24-70mm f/2.8 look designed, built, and ready to become crown jewels in the Canon RF lens lineup, ushering in a new level of performance and quality glass built for the promising EOS R mirrorless system.

New Firmware for the EOS R & EOS RP:

The new announcements don’t stop with the gear. Canon has also announced that a new firmware update will be coming for the Canon EOS R and EOS RP cameras, and that includes enhancements for autofocus (AF) to help you better capture and track your subjects.

Eye Detection AF will get a boost, and will be able to focus in on the subject’s eye even at long distances, and do so quicker. On top of that, the AF frame tracking will be enhanced, bringing virtually zero delay between the focusing itself and its display on the frame.

Canon notes that the firmware will be available as a free download in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for more updates.
