RED recently released its first entrant in the DSMC3 generation starting with a live YouTube Q&A. During the livestream, RED customers were introduced to the newest flagship camera and sensor in the RED arsenal — the V-RAPTOR 8K Camera. Similar to the cameras in DSMC2, this new launch offers top-of-the-line features that are difficult to match. The V-RAPTOR has the highest dynamic range, fastest cinema quality sensor scan time, and highest frame rates of any other RED camera. Here’s what else you can expect.
Key Features of the V-Raptor 8K Camera
- Multi-format 8k sensor
- Dynamic range of 17+ stops
- Integrated RF mount
- Also supports EF lenses with mount adapter
- Only 4.03 lbs.
- Integrated V-Lock battery interface
- REDCODE formats
Lens Capability
First off, the V-RAPTOR has the largest lens selection of any comparable camera on the market. It has an integrated RF mount. Although, it can also support Canon EF lenses with a Canon RF to EF adapter. The sky really is the limit when it comes to lens choices.
Multi-Format 8K Sensor
The V-RAPTOR packs a big punch in a very small package. The camera weighs just over four pounds (4.03, to be exact). This means you can capture 8K footage just about anywhere.
With the ability to shoot 8K Large Format or 6K Super35, you can decide what’s best to get the shot you need. The V-RAPTOR is capable of recording 120 fps at 8K, 140 fps at 7K, 175, 160 fps at 6K, 192 fps at 5K, 240 fps at 4K, 320 fps at 3K, 400 fps at 3K, and 480 fps at 2K. The sensor also has the highest recorded dynamic range of any RED camera at 17+ stops. This means you can capture up to 600 fps at 2K if necessary.
V-RAPTOR will also continue to feature REDCODE RAW codec, which allows users to capture 16-bit RAW, and leverage RED’s latest IPP2 workflow and color management.
How Does It Compare?
If you’re looking for global shutter, the RED Komodo is a great pick. While the V-RAPTOR’s shutter is extremely fast, the Komodo is still king if you’re looking for a global shutter that sacrifices no dynamic range or image quality.
Additionally, the 98Wh battery will give you approximately one hour of battery life with the V-RAPTOR. This is different from the Komodo, which runs on DP-9XX series batteries and typically loses power at a slower rate. Although, the V-RAPTOR stacks up powerfully against the Komodo beat in virtually every other category.
DSMC3 Accessories
Along with the V-RAPTOR, RED also announced accompanying accessories to improve your cinematography experience. All of them are listed below:
- V-RAPTOR ST
- RED Pro cfexpress card
- RED Cfexpress card reader
- REDVOLT micro-V
- RED Compact dual v-lock charger
- V-RAPTOR wing grip
- DSMC3 RED touch 7.0
The new DSMCS RED touch 7.0 is likely the most impressive of the bunch. This seven-inch LCD screen provides HD viewing while recording with the V-RAPTOR camera system. It also has 100% DCI-P3 Color Gamut coverage to ensure color accuracy. If you want to control the camera via the screen, it has a new responsive menu system with various features such as Vectorscope, Histogram, Color Picker, and Pixel Zoom. The screen is less than two pounds to make sure your gear set-up stays as light as possible.
The V-Raptor 8K Camera Starter Pack (which includes the camera and all accessories) is currently available in the Limited Edition White for $24,500. There is limited stock available.
It is also available to rent at Adorama Rental Company.
