Sony has unveiled an update to one of its most popular G Master zooms, the Sony 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II lens. The new lens, which is more geared toward videographers, uses tech from Sony’s super-telephoto G Master primes. It boosts performance while dropping 30% of the previous generations’ weight. It is the lightest 70-200mm lens available on the market, weighing only 2.3 lbs.
The F2.8 maximum aperture setting gives you smooth and beautiful bokeh thanks to its newly developed 11- ring unit. Furthermore, the lens’ advanced optical design, which includes an XA element, eliminates the notorious “onion ring” effect, further enhancing the bokeh. A total of two ED and two Super ED elements have also been added to prevent chromatic aberration.
Autofocus
G Master’s latest version has evolved autofocusing capabilities that make it four times faster and 30% more accurate than its previous version. Sony promises a four-fold improvement in focus. The lens features internal focusing to enable fast, smooth, and quiet shooting, with little distraction. Furthermore, floating elements ensure the camera’s sharpness is maintained throughout the focusing range.
Video
For a consistent capture, videographers will appreciate reduced focus breathing, focus shifting while zooming, and axis shifting while zooming. This 70-200mm lens is equipped with a de-clickable aperture ring for smooth depth-of-field adjustments, like other recent G Master lenses. Using the focusing ring, you can activate manual focusing all the time, even in AF-C mode, so you can easily fine-tune your shots. The manual focusing system with linear response provides accurate and efficient adjustments. Lenses with such features are typically found only in cinema lenses that cost exponentially more.
Professionally Designed
Professionals provided direct feedback on the design of the lens. With the Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II Lens, you can be assured that it will operate reliably in any environment. Featuring dust and moisture resistance, the lens also boasts a fluorine-coating that repels water, oil, and other contaminants while facilitating easy handling and removal of fingerprints from the surface of the lens. The anti-reflection coating also enables you to use it in challenging lighting environments with minimal distortion.
Sony listens to and learns from its customers. Even if it takes time to achieve results, they deliver the tools that artists of all levels want, need, and request. The new Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II will be available for preorder soon, for approximately $2,800.
