Tokina today announced a sneak preview of two new pro DSLR-oriented prime lenses that it is developing for a release in a few months, at CP+, the large photo trade show taking place this week in Japan. The Tokina Opera 50mm f/1.4 FF is designed for Nikon and Canon-mount DSLRs, while the 20mm f/2 FE AF FíRIN is the long-awaited autofocus version of the same lens for full-frame Sony E-Mount cameras.

Tokina Opera 50mm f/1.4 FF

With the debut of Opera 50mm F1.4 FF Tokina is launching what they describe as “a new series of next-generation premium full frame lenses for high-end DSLR cameras.” The so-called “Opera” series is claimed to perfectly match recent high-spec full frame DSLR cameras, that keep requiring high-quality optics to be used with. In addition to originally high-valued Tokina AT-X series, this new Opera series is positioned as top premium series of full frame size lenses; Tokina promises more lenses in the lineup in the future.

Designed for full-frame format DSLR cameras, the 50mm F1.4 FF adopts a ring-shaped ultrasonic motor for autofocus drive module. Weather sealing prevents from dust and moisture coming inside the lens body. For the first time in Tokina line up Nikon mount model incorporates an electric diaphragm mechanism. The direction of the focus ring rotation fits the genuine Nikon and Canon lens.

Tokina says they chose “Opera” to reflect high-end performance and artistry. “We chose the name Opera for a new premium full-frame DSLR lens series thinking of a lens that will help photographers in creating real “work of art”. The Tokina Opera is expected to be released in the summer of 2018.

Tokina FiRIN

Tokina FíRIN 20mm F2 FE AF

The FíRIN 20mm F2 FE AF is an autofocus version of the existing Tokina 20mm f/2 for full-frame Sony cameras. It has the same optical design as the MF model, with aspherical elements and 3 lenses molded from Super-low Dispersion glass to significantly reduce any type of aberration including spherical aberration, distortion, and chromatic aberration while assuring high resolution and stunning performance even at a wide open aperture.

A ring-shaped ultrasonic AF motor is said to be quick, silent, and accurate. It is compatible with Fast Hybrid AF system and all AF function settings, just as with other E-mount lenses. Fine manual focus adjustment and MF assist will also be available. Electronic contacts to the camera instruct the sensor to correct shading, distortion, and lateral chromatic aberrations. The lens is compatible with Sony’s in-body image stabilization feature.

The Tokina FíRIN 20mm F2 FE AF is tentatively slated to be available by the end of May.
