This adaptor is very well made and really makes using canon lenses as easy as native lenses. The four star review is because I got the old version with the shiny inside. I would have loved to get the newer model.

If you read on the Metabones website, they state that AF operation is very slow, and for many older lenses (pre 2006 I believe) may not be supported. That said, in decent contrast, the AF can work, albeit painfully slowly. This is not an adapter that will allow Sony to kill off Canon by any means, but with the focus peaking features of the A7 series, along with the focus magnification assist feature, allow for accurate and relatively quick MF experience once you understand how to use it on the Alpha bodies. All EXIF is supported for EF lenses (native and third party) as long as EXIF is supported by the lens. I have some third party lenses that don't transmit EXIF on the Canon bodies, and that is the same through this adapter. It doesn't magically create EXIF if there is none transmitted to begin with. Not a good solution if you're needing quick AF, and I've defaulted to manually focusing just about everything because it's quicker, but if shooting products, or still life, I'd imagine the AF would work just fine for that. I'd say that the lens release button/lever seems weak by comparison to the overall construction though. As long as it locks, and handles the rigors of lens changes for the foreseeable future, I'm fine with it, but it does feel to be a little light weight and feel it could have been built more solidly to match the rest of the adapter. Otherwise though, this adapter is solidly built and does what it says it will do. As long as expectations are realistic, I think most will be pleased.

I'd hoped to utilize my Canon 'L' lenses on my Sony A7II. Tried 3 Canon lenses. Sure, the lenses fit onto the Sony, but the electronic focusing was completely lost. It just hunted, and in manual focusing there was no 'assist' and the image stayed very dark. So, no decent manual focusing, no functioning auto focusing. I tested this pretty carefully, as I wanted it to work. Perhaps the f stop functioned, I don't know, because I packed it up and returned it. No focusing? Really?

The Metabones Canon EF Lens to Sony NEX Camera Lens Mount Adapter (Mark IV) attaches a Canon EF lens to a Sony NEX camera. It is referred to as a "Smart Adapter" because it retains electronic communication between the camera and lens and therefore provides automatic aperture control, ExIF data, image stabilization and autofocus. The adapter is powered by the camera body, so no external power source is required. The Mark IV provides the same functions as the Mark III but provides optimized performance and an improved internal structure.
The Smart Adapter IV offers two distinct operation modes: Green and Advanced modes. Each mode supports a different set of features and is selected when you mount the lens. Green mode is the default mode and it is designed to conserve battery power by limiting aperture diaphragm movements and image stabilization. Certain other functions are not available in Green Mode including Auto-Magnify MF Assist and DOF preview. The adapter's tripod foot is detachable and compatible with Arca Swiss, Markins, Photo Clam ball heads.
Autofocus speed is very slow and inadequate for most moving subjects. Autofocus may be disabled for older Canon lenses and most third-party lenses, including most Sigma, Tamron and Tokina lenses and all Contax N lenses modified by Conurus. This Smart Adapter is also compatible with fully manual lenses which have no electrical contacts.
