Review Summary

I purchased this filter after seeing great reviews for it on Youtube, it was consistently rated better than the more expensive filters, it was not until after the purchase that I noted in a couple of reviews that these filters although excellent are somewhat fragile, in one review it was recommended that the filter only be used in studio settings. I am still happy with the purchase, I am a still photographer that uses these filters in landscape photography often in somewhat harsh environments, mountain streams and waterfalls. Because I use this with Canon wide angle lenses I had purchased 105mm filters to go on lenses with 77mm filter threads using a step up ring to avoid vignetting, to solve the fragility problem I purchased somewhat inexpensive 105mm UV filters to protect the ND filters from the elements, I also purchased lens caps because Sigma makes a great lens cap for about $10 that fits the filters perfectly. I use a rear UV filter to further protect when not in use.

What sets the Tokina PRO IRND 0.3 Filter - 1 Stop apart is its innovative design that combines IR and ND filtering capabilities. This is a crucial tool for modern cinematographers as many high-end cinema cameras lack built-in low-pass or IR cut filters. These cameras are designed to mimic the human eye and capture as much image data as possible, making them highly sensitive to light. This sensitivity necessitates the use of a robust ND filter to maintain exposure, but this can inadvertently introduce infrared pollution.
The Tokina PRO IRND filter, developed by the expert team at Kenko Tokina, addresses this issue with its groundbreaking Accu-ND Technology. This technology allows the filter to precisely control the amount of light entering the lens without affecting color, thus eliminating the need for constant white balance adjustments and post-shoot color corrections. This revolutionary filter stabilizes color transmittance across the visible spectrum, making it a game-changer in the field of cinematography.
Available in both round and square/rectangular styles, the Tokina PRO IRND filter employs a high-precision ND vapor deposition coating. On the round filter, this coating is applied to both sides of the glass, ensuring a truly neutral filter. The square/rectangular filter, on the other hand, features the coating sandwiched between two layers of glass. This design allows for repeated re-polishing if the filter gets scratched, thereby extending its lifespan.
Unlike other IRND filters that cut near-infrared from a specific wavelength, the Tokina PRO IRND filter uses a suppression method to eliminate infrared pollution up to 1200nm. This approach is less likely to produce unwanted color shifts, making the Tokina PRO IRND filter a superior choice for professional cinematographers seeking to capture true-to-life images.
