Review Summary

I purchased this filter after seeing great reviews for it on Youtube, it was consistently rated better than the more expensive filters, it was not until after the purchase that I noted in a couple of reviews that these filters although excellent are somewhat fragile, in one review it was recommended that the filter only be used in studio settings. I am still happy with the purchase, I am a still photographer that uses these filters in landscape photography often in somewhat harsh environments, mountain streams and waterfalls. Because I use this with Canon wide angle lenses I had purchased 105mm filters to go on lenses with 77mm filter threads using a step up ring to avoid vignetting, to solve the fragility problem I purchased somewhat inexpensive 105mm UV filters to protect the ND filters from the elements, I also purchased lens caps because Sigma makes a great lens cap for about $10 that fits the filters perfectly. I use a rear UV filter to further protect when not in use.

Why settle for anything less than the pinnacle of optical precision when capturing your cinematic visions The Tokina 86mm Cinema PRO IRND 2.1 Filter is a testament to high-quality, professional-grade filtration, designed to meet the exacting demands of today's sensitive high-end cinema cameras. Unlike standard cameras, these advanced devices lack built-in low-pass or IR cut filters to maximize image data capture, closely emulating the human eye's perception. However, this heightened sensitivity to light necessitates the use of a robust ND filter to manage exposure and mitigate infrared pollution.
The Tokina Cinema PRO IRND filter stands out in the market, addressing common IRND filter issues such as color shifting and the laborious process of continual white balance adjustments. With Kenko Tokina's innovative Accu-ND Technology at its core, this filter delivers a neutral density effect that meticulously regulates light entry without compromising color accuracy. Experience a groundbreaking solution that ensures consistent color transmittance across the entire visible spectrum.
Available in both round and square/rectangular formats, the round PRO IRND filter boasts an ND vapor deposition coating on both glass surfaces, ensuring a high-precision, truly neutral filtration experience. The square/rectangular variant features the same coating, but it is sandwiched between two glass layers, allowing for re-polishing and extending the filter's lifespan even if scratched.
In the realm of IRND filter manufacturing, two primary methods prevail: one that cuts near-infrared from a specific wavelength and another that controls infrared up to 1200nm without outright cutting. The Tokina PRO IRND filter employs the latter approach, using suppression to eliminate infrared pollution effectively. This method avoids the common pitfall of unwanted color shifts associated with the cutting technique.
Durable, versatile, and effective, the Tokina 86mm Cinema PRO IRND 2.1 Filter is the ideal choice for filmmakers and photographers who demand the best in optical control and image fidelity. With a density rating of 2.1, equivalent to 7 stops, this filter is an essential tool for achieving the perfect exposure in challenging lighting conditions without sacrificing the integrity of your image's colors.
